About the Role
Reporting to the General Manager – Flemington Place, this role plays a critical part in driving a safe, compliant, and proactive workplace culture at VRC. You will be responsible for leading and implementing health and safety strategies, ensuring compliance with legislation, and embedding best-practice safety processes across the Club. - Identify, assess, and control WHS risks through scheduled inspections, audits, and the active management of the WHS Risk Register.
- Ensure compliance with WHS legislation, including hazardous materials management, asbestos control, and psychosocial risk mitigation.
- Lead the investigation of incidents, hazards, and near misses; ensure accurate and timely reporting; and oversee the implementation of effective corrective actions.
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee WHS risk assessments for race days, events, construction builds, and bump-outs, including emergency response planning and on-site safety support.
- Deliver and coordinate WHS inductions, training programs, and ongoing safety education for employees, contractors, and volunteers.
- Promote and embed a strong safety culture through visible leadership, coaching, toolbox talks, and proactive stakeholder engagement.
- Chair WHS Committee meetings, contributing to emergency planning, compliance reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Monitor and report WHS performance metrics, ensuring all documentation, audits, first aid resources, and compliance requirements are maintained to a high standard.
About You
- Tertiary qualifications in Work Health and Safety (or a related discipline), with in-depth knowledge of WHS legislation, codes of practice, and relevant industry standards.
- Proven experience managing WHS in high-risk, rapid-paced environments — ideally across large-scale events, public venues, and operational areas such as stables, tracks, or temporary infrastructure builds.
- Demonstrated capability in risk identification and control for areas such as crowd safety, contractor management, working at heights, plant and equipment, and hazardous substances.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders — from ground staff and contractors to senior executives and regulatory bodies.
- Exceptional communication skills, able to deliver clear, concise, and practical safety guidance in high-pressure situations such as race days or major event builds.
- Proactive and solutions-focused, with the agility to adapt to rapidly changing operational requirements while maintaining strong safety outcomes.
