Primary objective
Provide high level differentiated support to the NT Department of Education and Training in the governance, development
and monitoring of operational policies, including managing a policy register.
Context statement
Quality Standards and Regulation is the centre of expertise for policy, regulation, compliance, and standards for all areas of
education. The Operational Policy work unit is responsible for the oversight and co-ordination of operational policy
throughout the NT Department of Education and Training.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide strategic advice and identify opportunities for continuous improvement through the provision of high-level
differentiated support in the development and evaluation of policy initiatives.
2. Initiate and undertake research, and prepare high level, comprehensive briefings, reports and papers on a range of policy
related issues.
3. Coordinate the unit's capacity to ensure an effective response to issues raised by policy owners and resolve complex
issues as appropriate.
4. Contribute to, and support, management teams, and work with staff to ensure their understanding and participation in
the unit's policy, planning and reporting responsibilities.
5. Work with external stakeholders to enhance the delivery of educational services to schools through policy.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Extensive project management and policy monitoring and analysis experience including high-level ability to investigate,
manage and report on complex issues, evaluate associated benefits, and recommend strategies.
2. Strong political awareness and demonstrated ability to appropriately and strategically deal with matters of a political,
sensitive or confidential nature.
3. Well-developed knowledge and understanding of government and departmental processes including preparing high
level reports, discussion papers and correspondence including executive briefings.
4. Strong, highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to actively participate in a dynamic
and committed team.
5. Demonstrate contemporary knowledge of relevant legislation, strategies, policies, trends and developments across the
Territory and on a national scale.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualifications in education, public policy or administration, business or similar.
2. Contemporary knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
