About the school

The National School of Medicine offers a four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program that has been fully accredited by the Australian Medical Council of Australia and is highly ranked by graduates in national surveys. Key features include a focus on small group teaching and problem-based learning, combined with rich clinical experiences across the entire program. The school also offers several postgraduate programs.

About the role

This role supports the planning, organisation, and strategic management of the School of Medicine, Sydney MD Program. As a member of the School's leadership team, the Associate Professor contributes to collaborative decision‑making and ensures that the school goals align with the University's objectives and strategic direction as a Catholic university.

To perform this position, it is essential that the person be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is a genuine occupational qualification, under 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW), that applicants are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Applicants are requested to demonstrate their Indigenous heritage in addition to addressing the selection criteria.


Key Responsibilities

* Provide vision and leadership to strengthen cultural capability across the National School, ensuring it remains a culturally safe environment for staff and students.
* Manage the campus-based Aboriginal Health Teams in Sydney and ensure culturally appropriate ways of working in teaching and learning.
* Maintain and enhance connections, networks, relationships and collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
* Lead and oversee the delivery, assessment, review and continuous development of the Aboriginal Health curriculum across Sydney and Fremantle, liaising with Domain Leads, Discipline Leaders and reporting to the National Head of Medical Education and Innovation.
* Manage recruitment, retention and graduation of Aboriginal medical students, including identifying and securing funding opportunities and overseeing wellbeing, student issues and wrap‑around supports.
* Provide leadership in fostering excellence in scholarship and maintain high-quality teaching achievement while contributing to curriculum innovation and the scholarship of teaching and learning at divisional, University and national levels.


Qualifications, skills & experience

* Medical qualification eligible for AHPRA registration, plus either a PhD or Fellowship of a relevant professional body, or a Masters degree in a relevant field with a minimum of five years of teaching experience in the Higher Education sector.
* Proven experience in medical education, clinical practice, and engaging with health services.
* Demonstrated capability in managing teams within complex organisational environments.
* Strong people management abilities, with excellent communication, influencing skills, and a demonstrated commitment to providing high-level pastoral care to students.
* Ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

* identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and
* be accepted as such by the community in which they live or have lived.

Supporting documentation may include, but is not limited to, a letter of Aboriginality signed under the common seal from a recognised incorporated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community organisation such as Land Council or Elders group, Aboriginal Medical Service or a letter on letterhead from a Local Aboriginal Land Council demonstrating membership of the Council.
