Bluefin is partnering with a newly formed and fast-growing bank to find a Senior Legal Counsel. With a refreshed brand, upgraded technology platforms and a strong executive team, the business is entering an exciting next phase of growth. They are now looking to appoint a Senior Legal Counsel to join their expanding legal and risk function. This client will also consider an experienced Legal Counsel from 5 years PQE. Reporting into the Head of Legal, this role works closely with senior leaders across the bank and provides commercially focused legal advice that supports innovation, modern product development and strong customer outcomes. Key responsibilities
• Providing practical, solutions based legal advice across credit, consumer finance, regulated products, contracts and general commercial issues
• Supporting the rollout of new technology and digital banking products
• Advising the business on compliance obligations including AFSL and ACL requirements
• Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements
• Working closely with risk, compliance, product, operations and the executive team on strategic projects
• Managing external counsel where required
• Promoting a strong and proactive risk culture by identifying, analysing, mitigating or accepting risks in line with the organisation's risk appetite, and providing legal guidance to support risk management across the business
• Partnering with stakeholders across the business, including the in-house legal team and external counsel, to deliver practical solutions and manage expectations effectively
• Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, industry bodies, suppliers and regulators
• Contributing to project papers, committee submissions and board reporting as required
• Monitoring changes in the external environment, regulatory landscape and internal operations to identify emerging legal or compliance risks
• Developing strategies and recommended actions for new initiatives, process improvements and business priorities
• Engaging, instructing and managing external legal advisers, including obtaining fee estimates, managing panel providers and reviewing and approving invoices
• Working closely with the Head of Legal on scoping external legal work, escalating risks or sensitive matters, and ensuring alignment with legal team processes and guidance
• Supervising or supporting Inhouse Counsel or Paralegals where required, including involvement in legal project management
• Contributing to Legal Team initiatives such as developing and maintaining standardised agreements and legal templates, and preparing or delivering training for business units
About you
• A minimum of 6 years PQE, either from a financial services organisation or a banking and finance focused team in private practice
• Experience across regulated financial products, consumer law, credit or general commercial law
• Interest in working in a modern, technology enabled banking environment
• Australian Practicing Certificate
