Careers for First Nations Australians – Affirmative Measures
Bring your culture, your strength, and your story
The Australian Border Force is committed to attracting, recruiting and retaining Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples by removing barriers to career progression. We are creating culturally safe workplaces that respect and value First Nations knowledge, perspectives and lived experiences.
With the Australian Border Force, you can build a stable and rewarding career, while still having time for family and friends. We operate in all Australian capital cities as well as across a range of regional locations. We offer flexible opportunities including part-time and shift arrangements (after training, dependent on the area you are deployed to).
As a Border Force Officer, you could be protecting Australia’s borders across air, land or sea. You’ll play a vital role in protecting communities and contributing to Australia’s national security.
Our entry level salary range is $66,839 to $76,792 plus 15.4% superannuation, with generous leave and allowance entitlements. Successful applicants will benefit from an Enterprise Agreement salary increase effective 12 March 2026. There are further benefits depending on your placement and career pathway. We provide access to training, career development and mentoring, to build capable officers and create a skilled workforce.
NAIDOC and ceremonial leave are available, and we have dedicated First Nations programs, networks and support services.
“Being part of a workplace that actively encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices makes me feel seen, heard and supported.”
— Tiana, ABF First Nations Liaison Officer and proud Kamilaroi woman
Border Force Officers begin their careers undertaking the Border Force Officer Recruit Training (BFORT) program. It is a paid traineeship involving classroom and on-the-job experiences that prepares you for operational duties across Australia’s border environments.
Training locations are determined by ABF operational requirements and may not always be available in your preferred state or region. It is recommended that you select the location that best suits you when applying for a BFORT role.
If you apply for a role, under the BFORT program, that is located outside your current city or region, you will be responsible for any relocation and accommodation costs. You must be available to commence training on the specified start date when you are offered a BFORT role. You will remain in this location for the duration of the training program, as well as after you successfully complete and graduate.
If you are looking for a rewarding, well-paid and secure career, with the opportunity to grow and learn, then the Australian Border Force might be the right opportunity for you!
Applications for the 2026 Border Force Officer Recruit Training Program open on Wednesday 11 February 2026 and closes on Tuesday 10 March 2026. So, get your application in now!
