Join our supportive WHS team and play a key role in keeping our outdoor operational teams safe by providing practical, on‑the‑ground WHS support across Wollongong's depots and worksites.
You'll work across both the field and the office, building strong relationships with operational teams while also supporting key WHS functions such as documentation, reporting and system improvement. In the field, you'll provide practical, on‑the‑ground WHS guidance and become a trusted point of contact for supervisors and frontline staff. In the office, you'll contribute to WHS planning, analysis and continuous improvement activities. Your work directly supports Council's WHS objectives and the wellbeing of staff across the LGA.

This is a maximum term contract position to 30 June 2027, with the possibility of extension or permanency. Salary from $87,142 up to $100,466 per annum plus superannuation. (Salary package will be assessed based on skills, experience and qualifications). You may be required to work across the Wollongong Local Government Area, along with overtime or weekends, dependent on operational requirements.
What You Will Be Doing
In this role, you will:
Conduct site safety checks, depot inductions, and field‑based WHS support for operational teams across the LGA.Develop and maintain WHS documents such as Risk Assessments and SWMS, ensuring risks are clearly identified, communicated, and controlled.Lead or facilitate end‑to‑end incident investigations, identifying corrective actions and monitoring the effectiveness of controls.Support the implementation and improvement of Council's WHS Management System and operational safety processes.Extract, analyse, and interpret WHS data to help guide safety conversations and improvements.Deliver WHS training, toolbox talks, and safety briefings to a wide range of staff.Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, from operational crews to SafeWork NSW.
About You
You're an experienced Safety Officer who thrives in dynamic, boots‑on‑the‑ground environments. You enjoy getting out into the field and engaging directly with teams who rely on clear, practical WHS support. You work confidently and independently most of the time, comfortable planning your day, managing your workload, and providing advice without needing close supervision.
You Bring
Certificate IV in Work Health & Safety (or higher)Frontline WHS experience in construction, civil, depot, trade or similar operational settings.Strong capability in risk assessments, SWMS, WHS documentation, and improving safety processes.Experience conducting incident investigations from start to finish.Excellent communication skills-you know how to tailor safety messages to supervisors, frontline staff, and external partners.Confidence using WHS systems, databases and the Microsoft Office suite.A collaborative approach, balanced with the ability to work independently.A current NSW Driver Licence and a General Construction Induction Card (White Card) (both mandatory).
