Overview

AEMO is Australia's independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO's purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

Department: System DesignDivision: Onboarding & ConnectionsReference number: 12958Engagement type: Permanent

About The Role

AEMO's System Design division plays a central role in shaping and planning the future power system as Australia undergoes rapid transformation. As renewable generation scales and electrification accelerates, the volume of new transmission, distribution and generation projects continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. With more than 160 GW of new generation forecast to connect over the next 30 years, this role places you at the centre of the nation's energy transition. You will help integrate a diverse mix of technologies — including onshore and offshore wind, hydro, solar, battery and storage systems, and emerging hydrogen projects — ensuring the system evolves reliably and efficiently. You will work closely with network service providers, developers, investors, equipment manufacturers, technology specialists, consultants, and government and regulatory bodies, collaborating daily with key experts across the industry. Your work will involve power system modelling, assess system behaviour and constraints, and ensuring new generating plants meet operational requirements. You will partner with NSPs, developers and OEMs to diagnose and resolve generator model and system issues, while working across AEMO to understand how system constraints and operational developments affect new connections. A key part of the role is the ability to translate technically complex issues into clear, practical insights that support informed decisions by diverse stakeholders.

This position also offers the opportunity to visit the projects you help enable, develop long‐term relationships with major industry players, mentor junior team members, and build your professional profile through industry forums, working groups, conferences and relevant memberships.

Reporting to the Regional Engineering Manager, Onboarding and Connections, this role can be based in any Australian state. AEMO is committed to flexible working arrangements, supported by strong team structures, a collaborative culture and communication tools that keep our people connected across the organisation.

What You Will Be Doing

* Collaborate with NSPs, applicants and OEMs to assess and negotiate generator performance standards.
* Conduct power system simulations and analysis to determine grid connection requirements for large‐scale generators.
* Interpret simulation results, draw sound engineering conclusions and provide robust technical recommendations.
* Communicate complex technical issues clearly for both technical and non‐technical audiences, supporting internal and external stakeholders.
* Manage multiple projects effectively while contributing to AEMO's trusted relationships, governance materials, progress reporting and lessons‐learned activities.

What You Will Bring To The Role

* Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or other discipline relevant to power systems analysis.
* Demonstrated experience leading and contributing to technical project teams, applying a pragmatic, service‐oriented and outcome‐focused approach to problem solving.
* Well‐developed capability in managing generator connection processes, including assessing and resolving generator and power system performance issues.
* Strong ability to negotiate and navigate complex technical matters involving commercial and reputational considerations, with an understanding of the key drivers for large‐scale infrastructure and generation developers.
* Excellent communication skills, able to clearly explain technical concepts to non‐technical audiences and influence stakeholders effectively.

In Return Some Of Our Benefits To You

* Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options.
* Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
* Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
* Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
* Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
