MechTest provides custom load testing, mechanical testing, metallurgical testing, chemical analysis, weld and welder qualification, and failure investigation services to various engineering sectors.

We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Welding Inspector (i.e. CSWIP) to join our team. This position is suitable for either an experienced, certified inspector, a materials engineer, or a boilermaker who is interested in making a career change. We need an enthusiastic individual with a strong passion for welding quality and a keen eye for detail, as well as a desire to learn.

About the Role

This position is approximately 50% desk-based and 50% workshop-based. You will support both inspection and production activities by assisting in the manufacture and evaluation of welded test coupons.

A key part of the role involves producing test specimens, preparing them for laboratory testing, and assessing the results according to relevant standards. You will also be responsible for writing clear technical reports based on these laboratory findings.

Additionally, the role includes operating CNC machines and workshop equipment (or being willing to receive training in their operation) to support specimen preparation and general workshop tasks.

Key Responsibilities

* Conduct visual and dimensional inspections of welded joints.
* Verify welding procedures, qualifications, and consumables.
* Interpret engineering drawings, WPSs, and technical documentation.
* Identify defects and non-conformances, and assist with corrective actions.
* Prepare clear and accurate inspection reports.
* Operation of workshop and laboratory machine tools and instruments.

About You

The role is suited to either:

* A qualified Welding Inspector (CSWIP 3.0 / 3.1 or equivalent).
* A hands-on individual passionate about welding and quality, looking to grow into the inspection field.

We are particularly interested in candidates with:

* A background in a fabrication workshop, welding, or metalworking environment.
* A materials engineering background with a strong interest in welding processes.

Preferred Skills & Experience

* Understanding of common welding processes (MMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW).
* Good knowledge of weld defects and inspection methods.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively.
* High attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
* Ability to read and interpret engineering and fabrication drawings.

What We Offer

* Opportunity to work with a skilled and supportive team.
* Career development, training, and certification support.
* Exposure to diverse and challenging fabrication projects.
* A positive workplace culture focused on quality and safety.

You will be working alongside our experienced team of technicians and engineers; gaining practical experience in the workshop and mechanical testing laboratory. All job specific training will be provided, you just need a willingness to learn.

MechTest comprises a team of Metallurgists, Engineers and Technologists. MechTest is committed to the continuous professional development of employees.
