Overview
We are seeking a Principal Government Lawyer with strong commercial law expertise to co-lead and manage, in partnership with another Principal Government Lawyer, the Commercial Law – Corporate, PALM and WR, a specialist commercial law team within the Commercial and Information Law Branch.
As an ‘in house’ legal unit, you and your team will have a unique opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the core business of your client areas. Your team will primarily service the commercial law needs of the department’s Corporate and Enabling Services Group (including commercial property work, centralised procurement advising, and IT procurement and contracting), the Pacific Labour Operations Division (which administers the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility Scheme through deeds with participating employers) and the Workplace Relations Group.

Capabilities
We are seeking individuals with the ability to lead and co-manage a commercial legal practice with respect to the work of dedicated client areas, including:
- Providing complex commercial legal advice and drafting services as the ‘top level’ legal technician for the relevant client areas, and oversighting staff in their provision of advice and drafting services at level;
- Understanding the strategic and operational environment of clients to ensure legal services are not only technically sound but useful to clients in a practical way, taking into account their objectives and any legal risks,
- Leading and managing staff, including the development of staff capability, the management of their performance and health and well-being, and the provision of strategic direction to your work unit;
- Managing workloads and workflows, anticipating client needs and delivering legal services within agreed timeframes.
- Effective collaboration with peers and other legal teams to deliver a holistic legal service where client issues go beyond commercial law matters or affect other departmental areas.
