JOB SUMMARY
Atwell specializes in power generation and power delivery services including electrical high-voltage, substations, switchyard, transmission line, distribution design, overhead & underground collection systems, and renewable energy power generation facilities such as Windfarms, PV/Solar farms, and BESS facilities.
The Electrical Engineer with emphasis in power sector will play a key role in supporting the project team by leading various design components on individual projects.
This position requires the individual to develop and demonstrate expertise in performing the core responsibilities outlined below.
Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Five (5) plus years of experience in Renewable Energy or Utility projects.
Experience mentoring other employees.
Experience in utility or merchant power industry is a plus.
Good understanding of utility-scale engineering transmission and distribution theories and principles.
Working knowledge of PVCase, ArcGIS, Civil 3D, or similar geospatial software is preferred.
High proficiency in using specialty software and tools such as ETAP, CYMCAP, WinIGS, CDEGS, PSCAD, ASPEN One-liner, EMTP, and SKM is strongly desired.
Day To Day
PV/BESS
Leads electrical design for utility-scale PV Solar and BESS projects (20MW+), including single lines, site layouts, cable routing, trenching, grounding, equipment installation, wiring diagrams, fiber topologies, Met tower details, and crossing exhibits.
Demonstrates strong understanding of PV and inverter-based systems, including modules, inverters, racking, batteries, BMS/EMS, disconnects, transformers, switchgear, and other BOP components.
Develops and optimizes PV layouts and MV routing based on site constraints (topography, ALTA, land status, access, easements), using PVCase and Civil 3D.
Executes and reviews engineering calculations (NEC string sizing, voltage drop, conduit fill, and studies (load flow, short circuit, ampacity, grounding) using ETAP, CYMCAP, WinIGS, and CDEGS to ensure compliance with codes and standards.
Performs solar production simulations in PVsyst, factoring in environmental conditions, shading, orientation, and tilt to forecast energy output.
Specifies equipment, prepares BOMs, and reviews vendor drawings for PV/BESS systems—modules, inverters, racking, transformers, switchgear, UPS, batteries, chargers, MV cables, junction boxes, splices, grounding, and conduit hardware.
Coordinates closely with civil and structural teams to integrate electrical design with site access, equipment placement, structural supports, and foundation requirements.
ELECTRICAL STUDIES
Demonstrate strong understanding of electrical theory and concepts in performing studies such as: load flow & reactive power, short circuit, grounding, cable ampacity, energy loss, harmonics, protection coordination, arc flash, effective grounding, insulation coordination, induced voltages, and TOV/TRV is required.
Review utility interconnection studies and ensure compliance with interconnection and PPA requirements.
Ensure plant design compliance with applicable codes/standards and best industry practices.
Develop high-quality technical reports for documenting the process and results of the electrical studies performed.
EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET Accredited)
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certification desired for Level I through III
Professional Engineer (PE) License desired for Level IV and above
Pay Range - $80,000 - $130,000
