The Role
We are seeking two highly motivated Discipline Leaders with a passion for delivering innovative and valued outcomes to Defence in the area of Naval Platform Survivability (NPS).
Discipline Lead Air Explosives
Responsible for leading research in analytical, numerical and experimental methods that support material, system and whole-of-vessel survivability assessments to above-water weapon effects.
Key responsibilities:
Guide experimentation, simulation and analysis of above-water weapons impact and detonation against maritime materials, systems and platforms.
Lead research into novel methodologies that enhance DSTG's capability to measure, analyse and report on weapon effects, including explosive shock, blast, fragmentation and high-strain responses.
Discipline Lead Damage Control, Sensors & Data
Responsible for providing advice, developing technologies and assessing technical risks to Defence maritime platforms relating to damage control, recoverability and habitability from explosive and non-explosive damaging events.
Key responsibilities:
Guide modelling and assessment of damage control and habitability systems on Defence maritime platforms, including fire-suppression, flood, smoke, atmospheric control and integrated platform management systems.
Identify methodologies to simulate, integrate and assess new and novel damage control technologies into maritime platforms or Defence training environments, including data analytics and machine learning, augmented and virtual environments, and remote and autonomous sensors.
The Discipline Leads will:
Ensure S&T outcomes to Defence are high quality, delivered within timelines, and meet internal/external reporting requirements.
Foster networks within DSTG/Defence and with national/international partners in industry, academia and other defence agencies.
Create an inclusive environment by mentoring staff, contributing to group strategy and planning, providing clear communication, setting performance and behavioural standards, and delegating responsibility.
About our Team
DSTG (Defence Science and Technology Group) is the Australian Government's lead agency dedicated to providing innovation, science and technology support for the country's defence and security needs. The Platforms Division applies S&T to platform and systems analysis, research and development relevant to the Australian Defence Force.
The Signatures and Survivability (SAS) unit resides within the Platforms Division and undertakes research and development related to platform signatures, weapon and hazard effects, survivability and recoverability—including NPS—supporting the ADF and national security.
Our Ideal Candidate
Prospective Discipline Leaders must have experience in leadership and management to build collaborative multi-discipline teams in science, engineering, mathematics and data. You should think strategically, anticipate Defence needs, problem-solve, and operate under broad guidelines. Experience managing teams, facilities and resources needed for S&T delivery and effective engagement with the Defence and S&T ecosystems is required.
Qualifications and experience:
Senior research or engineering/management experience in relevant fields (e.g., explosives, damage control, sensors, data analytics).
Proven track record of leading multidisciplinary research projects.
Strong communication and mentoring skills.
Knowledge of Defence acquisition and regulatory processes (advantage).
