Where you'll be working
Southern covers a large area of the state, from Goulburn and Crookwell to the Victorian border, and surrounds the ACT on three sides. A total of 44 537sq kms, extending from the pristine beaches of the NSW South Coast, the farmlands of the Southern Tablelands, across the picturesque Monaro and spectacular Snowy Mountings of the Great Dividing Range.
We are home to five large Aboriginal nations – the Gundungurra, Ngambri, Ngunnawal, Ngarigo and Yuin people. Southern NSWLHD comprises of four Networks - Tablelands is centred around Goulburn, Monaro centred around Queanbeyan and Cooma, the Coastal Network located in the far south-east corner of NSW, and the Integrated Care Network.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for experienced and suitably qualified General Medicine Physician to join the medical team at Goulburn Base Hospital, part of the Inland Network.
Goulburn Base Hospital is a 100-bed facility that moved into a purpose-built Clinical Services Building in December 2021 with a new state of the art Level 4 Emergency Department, a Level 4 ICU and new Operating Theatres. Our ED sees approximately 20,000 presentations per year with a 25% admission rate. The ED workforce is staffed with Senior, Permanent and Casual CMOs. The ICU is staffed with Senior, Permanent and Casual CMO's. Goulburn ED has 2 resuscitation beds, 6 acute beds (including 2 isolation rooms), a fast-track area and 4 bedded SSU. There are new Paediatric, General Medical and Surgical Wards with purpose built negative flow areas and a Rehabilitation Ward. Services provided include 24/7 Emergency Care, General Medicine, General and Orthopaedic Surgery, Paediatrics, Maternity and Rehabilitation Medicine.
You will be employed by Southern NSW Local Health District. The position is primarily located at Goulburn Hospital. Secondary appointments within other facilities may occur by mutual agreement.
What you'll be doing
Reporting to the Head of Department, General Medicine and Director of Medical Services, you will play an important role in providing contemporary best practice Specialist Physician, General Medicine services for optimal patient outcomes. This includes team working with multidisciplinary colleagues to effectively and efficiently manage resources for best patient outcomes.
The General Medicine Department is divided into 3 teams, each led by a consultant and supported by rotating Basic Physician Trainees or Intensive Medicine Trainees from Canberra Health Services in addition to RMOs. Each Consultant will do a fair share of on-call duties and will be supported by a separate On-Call Medical Registrar on-site 24 hours a day. These include regular ward rounds, weekend duties including supporting junior medical teams.
You will use your expert clinical and management skills to provide the highest levels of care to the patients who access your service. You will balance your clinical responsibilities with developing the service and will take a leading role in clinical governance, service design projects and departmental activities as delegated and required by the Head of Department.
An important requirement of this role is a regular commitment to active participation in education and training activities for medical students, junior doctors and rotating registrars through bedside teaching, formal participation in Grand Rounds, JMO teaching in liaison with the DPET and supporting Registrars on rotation.
An additional sub-specialist expertise in Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, Peri-Operative Medicine, Gastroenterology or another sub-speciality would be an advantage. This role would be undertaken within an approved scope of practice and within the SNSWLHD in conjunction with other existing local Physicians.

Selection Criteria
* Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist General Physician or equivalent overseas qualification (Internal Medicine) either eligible for Expedited Specialist Pathway or substantially comparable on the RACP Specialist IMG Pathway.
* Demonstrated current clinical experience in General / Acute / Internal Medicine at an appropriate level.
* Demonstrated understanding of clinical governance principles including the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) standards in Australia.
* Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and provide effective leadership.
* Demonstrated commitment to teaching, clinical research, simulation and quality improvement.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and staff; and effective communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
Desirable
1. Fellowship of RACP in a sub-specialty as above.
2. Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education / Substantial experience in clinical teaching.
