Research Topic and Significance

The central research focus of this PhD project is the population genetics and Bt resistance of Spodoptera litura, an emerging cotton pest in northern Australia. Understanding the gene flow, dispersal patterns, and resistance development of S. litura is crucial for the success of Australia's Resistance Management Plan (RMP) and the sustainable cotton industry.

Project Details

This PhD position is jointly offered by Charles Darwin University and CSIRO, with the candidate primarily based at CDU in Darwin. The research will involve a comprehensive assessment of S. litura population structure, movement, and resistance development across northern Australian cotton landscapes.

* Tax‐free stipend of $41,190 per annum (base $34,190 + top‐up $7,000)

Candidate Profile

* Eligibility for admission to the PhD program at Charles Darwin University
* Australian citizenship or permanent residency, or New Zealand citizenship
* First‐Class Honours or equivalent in Molecular Biology, Ecology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, or a related field
* Availability to commence the PhD in 2026 and be based in Darwin

Highly desirable attributes include:

* Experience in molecular, genomics, or bioinformatics research
* At least one publication in a recognized peer‐reviewed journal
* Fieldwork experience
