About the organisation

Aboriginal Family Support Services (AFSS) is a key Aboriginal community-controlled organisation based in Adelaide, South Australia. AFSS is committed to fostering safe, culturally grounded environments that support Aboriginal children, young people, and families.

AFSS works to sustain and strengthen safe, supportive, and resilient Aboriginal communities through the delivery of culturally grounded programs and services. With a strong commitment to community-led outcomes, AFSS partners closely with Aboriginal families, communities, government, and non-government organisations to deliver meaningful and lasting impact.

About the role

This is a key executive leadership role responsible for shaping and guiding the strategic and operational direction of AFSS. Reporting to the Board of Management, the Chief Executive will oversee the delivery of the organisation’s Strategic and Business Plans, while ensuring the provision of high-quality, culturally responsive services.

You will lead the delivery of programs in line with funding agreements, ensuring key performance indicators and organisational targets are achieved. The role also plays a critical part in safeguarding and strengthening the financial sustainability of the organisation, while ensuring strong governance, ethical practice, and effective resource management across all areas.

A central focus of the role is fostering and maintaining strong relationships with Aboriginal communities, stakeholders, and partners across the public and private sectors. As an ambassador for AFSS, you will champion its work and help amplify its impact within the community.


About you

You are an experienced and values-driven leader with a strong commitment to culturally safe and responsive services in complex human services environments. You bring a deep understanding of working with Aboriginal communities and are committed to outcomes that are culturally grounded and community informed.

You are a strategic thinker with the ability to guide organisational performance and drive sustainable outcomes aligned with community needs. Your leadership style reflects inclusivity, empowerment, and a strong commitment to building capability, supporting teams, and fostering a positive workplace culture.

You are highly skilled in stakeholder engagement, with the ability to build and sustain trusted relationships across community, government and sector partners.

Your experience navigating complex environments enables you to deliver sustainable outcomes while leading with integrity and accountability. Experience within child protection, community services, or related sectors will be highly regarded.


Selection Criteria

* Deep knowledge of Aboriginal cultures, communities, and ways of knowing, being, and doing.
* Demonstrated executive or senior leadership experience in a complex human services environment.
* Proven experience delivering and overseeing community-based programs and services.
* Strong financial management, governance, and organisational leadership capability, preferably within an ACCO environment.
* Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships across sectors.
* High-level advocacy, communication, and negotiation skills.
* Knowledge of child protection systems, relevant legislation, and trauma-informed practice.
