The Opportunity
We are seeking a compassionate, community-focused Cancer Support Officer to join our Cancer Awareness team. This full-time role is based in Katherine or a Sunrise-serviced community and includes regular travel to surrounding communities.
In this frontline position, you will help deliver community education, reduce stigma, and support Aboriginal clients and families throughout their cancer journey—enhancing access to screening, referrals, appointments, and culturally safe care.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in planning and delivering cancer awareness and health promotion activities
Provide one-on-one and group client support for cancer prevention, screening, and care
Facilitate transport and appointment navigation for clients and families
Promote cancer literacy and early help-seeking through community engagement
Develop and distribute tailored health education materials
Work closely with clinical teams, community members, and other services
Maintain accurate records and contribute to programme data collection and reporting
Participate in local events such as women's health days and community festivals
Undertake training in cancer support, community health, and cultural safety
What You'll Bring
Certificate II or III in Community Services, Health Support, or willingness to train
Experience in community engagement, health promotion, or support services (desirable)
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially with Aboriginal communities
Commitment to privacy, confidentiality, and cultural respect
National Police Check and OCHRE card (or ability to obtain)
Acceptable NT vaccination status and Australian working rights
Physical capacity and willingness to travel to remote locations
