As part of the Senior Leadership Group, you will play a key role in promoting and influencing a shared commitment to the strategic direction of Defence, as outlined in the National Defence Strategy.

Your Role
Defence seeks exceptional senior executives for Chief of Division Grade 1 positions within its Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG). Ideal candidates are collaborative leaders with experience in innovation, science, and technology disciplines or in delivering impact from such fields. They should have a deep understanding of the IS&T value proposition for Defence and be effective communicators.
DSTG comprises nine Divisions across Science and Technology Capability Development, Program Delivery, and Enterprise, partnering across sectors to deliver Defence capabilities.
We aim to fill several positions at the Chief of Division Grade 1 level, with roles covering areas such as:
Strategy and Partnerships
* Engaging and influencing stakeholders to deliver Defence industry policies and programs that enhance Defence capability;
* Managing strategic partnerships with universities, industry, and research agencies;
* Overseeing the Australian Defence Science Universities Network and Defence Research Centres;
* Leading the development and execution of Defence’s IS&T strategy, science policy, and communication;
* Leading DSTG’s benchmarking and capability planning;
* Managing the international program to align with Defence’s strategic goals and foster cooperation with partner nations;
* Delivering the Australian Defence Science and Technology and Research Summit.
Science Capability
* Collaborating with international partners, industry, and academia to enhance Defence capabilities;
* Strategic planning and assurance of Defence’s key science and technology capabilities;
* Benchmarking capabilities of divisions and partners.
Engineering and Technology
* Research and operations in materials development, product design, and manufacturing;
* Managing DSTG’s Engineering Authority System for compliance and consistency;
* Overseeing the engineering workforce and talent pipelines;
* Leading secure computational, supercomputing, and digital research infrastructure;
* Ensuring cybersecurity and digital enablement of projects;
* Governing Data, ICT, and cybersecurity in high-end computing fields;
* Identifying and applying emerging advanced computing technologies.
