Overview
Structural Engineer role at BAE Systems Australia. Ideally based in Melbourne, VIC, working within the Antenna IPT team on the JORN program. You will design, analyse and assess the structure supporting high frequency antennas and radar antennas to safely house and operate the antenna elements.
You will design, analyse and assess antenna and antenna support structures including guyed- and self-supporting structures (steel lattice), steel and concrete monopoles, and wireworks to confirm they meet engineering standards and withstand environmental loads such as wind, ice and earthquakes, while ensuring antennas remain operational for the intended service life.
Responsibilities
- Design and configure antenna and antenna support structures (steel lattice towers, monopoles, and wireworks) and their foundations
- Calculate loads, perform structural analyses and check limit state strength, rigidity and stability
- Modal and finite element analysis of assemblies, components and parts
- Design guy cable assemblies, attachments, fittings and insulators
- Identify potential risks related to site designs and prepare risk assessment reports to ensure the safety of the structure and its equipment
- Validate structural designs through field testing and performance evaluations to ensure they meet requirements and standards
- Prepare detailed structural design reports and other technical documents for construction purposes
- Ensure all designs comply with industry standards and regulations (e.g., AS/NZS 1170, ANSI/TIA-222)
- Collaborate with Antenna IPT engineers to understand antenna requirements and ensure the system functions as a whole
- Design solutions for upgrading/strengthening existing structures to increase capacity or extend lifespan
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in civil, structural or mechanical engineering
- Proficiency in structural modelling and analysis software (SPACE GASS, STAAD/Bentley, ANSYS, etc.)
- Experience creating drawings, markups and working instructions for CAD drafters
- Understanding of tower and mast standards (ANSI/TIA-222, AS 3995, AS 1170.2)
- Knowledge of materials properties, guy cables (metallic and non-metallic), fittings, insulators, welding, coatings
- Robust foundation in applied physics and mechanics for structural integrity
- Defence security clearance or eligibility to obtain; ITAR eligibility
