Reporting directly to the GM of Sales and Marketing the position is accountable for:
Manufacturing Engineer / Project Manager
The Manufacturing Engineer / Project Manager is responsible for delivering complex engineering and manufacturing projects across Hardman Group, with a strong focus on gearbox re-engineering, reverse engineering, Defence and Aerospace manufacturing programs, and technically complex industrial work.
Reporting to the GM Sales & Marketing, the role operates primarily within R&I Instrument & Gear Co, with cross-division collaboration across Hardman Bros and Marks 4WD.
The position manages projects from RFQ and technical review through quotation, manufacturing and final delivery, ensuring work is delivered safely, on time, on budget and to specification, while meeting the high standards required in Defence, Aerospace, Mining and critical industrial applications.
The role also supports the continued development of Hardman Group's capabilities in gear manufacturing, gearbox refurbishment and remanufacture, complex machining, and defence-aligned engineering programs.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Project Management & Delivery
Lead and manage engineering and manufacturing projects from quotation through to production and delivery, including:
* Project planning, scheduling and resource coordination
* Risk identification and mitigation
* Monitoring delivery, cost and quality performance
* Coordinating cross-functional teams across engineering, machining, fabrication, assembly, procurement and quality
* Ensuring projects meet customer requirements and delivery commitments. Structured project management practices will be applied to ensure efficient delivery of complex engineering jobs.
Support and strengthen Hardman Group's capability in gearbox and drivetrain re-engineering, including:
* Technical assessment and inspection of gearboxes and drive systems
* Reverse engineering and failure analysis of critical components
* Development of refurbishment and remanufacturing solutions
* Supporting projects involving mining conveyor drives, heavy industrial gearboxes and rotating equipment
Support the preparation of technically sound and commercially competitive quotations, including:
* Reviewing RFQs and defining technical scope
* Supporting cost estimation and engineering risk identification
* Ensuring alignment between sales commitments and manufacturing capability
* Supporting proposals across Defence, Aerospace, Mining and industrial sectors
Customer & Project Interface
Act as a key technical interface between the customer, sales and manufacturing teams, supporting projects throughout the lifecycle.
Responsibilities include:
* Supporting technical discussions during quoting and project execution
* Providing updates on engineering progress and project milestones
* Ensuring customer requirements are clearly understood and delivered
* Support the development and coordination of external suppliers and subcontractors aligned with Hardman Group's strategic direction.
This includes:
* Establishing specialist suppliers for coatings, heat treatment and specialised processes
* Managing subcontractor engagement for complex engineering projects
* Ensuring supplier capability meets quality and compliance standards
Quality, Compliance & Defence Capability
* Supporting compliance with AS9100 and ISO 9001 quality systems
* Maintaining documentation and traceability for Defence and Aerospace programs
* Supporting safe work practices and WHS compliance
Business Growth Support
Support the continued growth of Hardman Group by:
* Identifying opportunities to apply the company's engineering and manufacturing capabilities
* Supporting technical development of new business opportunities
* Strengthening Hardman Group's position in Defence, Mining, Energy and industrial markets
Qualifications Experience and Skills
* Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing or related Engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
* Engineering diploma or higher qualification in Mechanical, Manufacturing or related Engineering discipline is required for this Manufacturing Engineer / Project Manager position.
* 5+ years' experience in manufacturing engineering, project management or heavy engineering environments.
* Minimum 5-8 years of manufacturing engineering experience is required for this role.
* Minimum 5-8 years of project management experience is required for this position.
* Experience managing engineering or manufacturing projects from quotation through to delivery.
* Strong understanding of gear manufacturing, CNC machining, fabrication or heavy mechanical equipment.
* Experience supporting technical quoting, estimation and scope definition.
* Ability to coordinate internal teams and external subcontractors to deliver projects successfully.
* Experience with gearbox refurbishment, reverse engineering or rotating equipment.
* Experience with gearbox engineering is preferred for this role.
* Exposure to Defence, Aerospace, Mining or heavy industrial sectors.
* Previous Defence or Aerospace industry experience is preferred but not essential.
* Familiarity with AS9100 / ISO9001 quality systems.
* Experience with ECI M1 ERP quoting system
* Familiarity with CRM systems.
* Ability to obtain Defence security clearance if required.
