About The Role
Council is seeking to appoint up to two suitable candidates with appropriate skills and experience for the role of independent member of the Audit, Risk & Improvement Committee.
Commitment
At least four ARIC meetings per year, and one extraordinary meeting to review the annual financial report. Additional meetings may be convened as required.
What's On Offer
* A maximum term contract of 4 years, extendable for a second term up to 4 years.
* Sitting fee: $940 per meeting, plus 12% super (inclusive of preparation, income tax and travel costs).
Who We're Looking For
Applicants must demonstrate a broad range of attributes, skills and experience relevant to the role of an ARIC Independent Member in areas including:
* Compliance
* Risk management
* Fraud control
* Financial management
* Governance
* Implementation of strategic plan, delivery program and strategies
* Service reviews
* Collection of performance measurement data by the council
Selection Criteria
* An ability to read and understand financial statements and understand the ethical requirements of government (including potential conflicts of interest).
* Functional knowledge in risk management, performance management, human resources management, internal and external auditing, financial reporting, accounting, management control frameworks, internal financial controls.
* Governance (including planning, reporting and oversight), or business operations.
* A capacity to form independent judgements and willingness to constructively challenge or question management practices and information.
* A professional, ethical approach to the exercise of duties and the capacity to devote necessary time and effort to responsibilities of an independent member of an audit, risk and improvement committee.
* Preparedness to undertake any training on the operation of audit, risk and improvement committees as recommended by the chairperson based on assessment of skills, knowledge and experience of the independent member.
Desirable Criteria
* Extensive senior level experience in governance and management of complex organisations.
* Possession of a relevant professional qualification or membership (e.g., Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), CPA Australia (CPA) or Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA)).

Applicants must meet the independence requirements outlined in the Guidelines.
Responsibilities Of Members
* Comply with the NSW Audit & Risk Management Guidelines for Local Councils.
* Attend and actively participate in all scheduled meetings.
* Review meeting papers and apply sound analytical skills, objectivity and judgement.
* Abide by confidentiality and ethical obligations.
* Provide open and independent advice.
* Undertake any follow-up actions requested by the Committee.

This position is based in Murwillumbah.
