The Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology are currently recruiting for a Technical Support Assistant (TSA) to join the team. This role is predominantly a hands-on role, best suited to a handy person that has a drive to improvise and be creative in their work. A demonstration of reasonable experience using your hands is essential with Bachelor degree, trade qualification or relevant experience. The focus of the work will largely be on concrete/mortar mixing, fresh and hardened concrete/mortar testing, operating the universal testing machines, operating various bench top equipment, setting up test rigs, looking after storage and housekeeping of the laboratory area.
The TSA will support and assist academic staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students in the use of laboratory facilities, and faculty staff associated with research and industrial projects. The TSA will work across a number of different technical support functions at the City Campus and Tech Lab at Botany.
The TSA will assist in all laboratory activities. This will require demonstrating professional knowledge and skills relating to laboratory equipment and providing ongoing support for teaching and research across the technical support team area. The TSA may help in the development of equipment for projects and support the use of equipment including new technology on commercially focused research projects, including consultancy work.
**In this role, you will be responsible for**:
- Under the guidance of the Senior Technical Support Officer (STSO), the TSA will have a good working knowledge and understanding of the equipment and infrastructure included in these laboratories. They will demonstrate this knowledge to other staff and students and support or direct them in their projects.
- Frequenctly supporting reseachers in conducting concrete/mortar mixing and handling of various materials.
- Due to the nature of the research, TSA will require to set up and operate complex or unusual instruments, experimental apparatus, and related components of experiments for the smooth running of laboratories.
- Instruct and support undergraduate and postgraduate research students across several laboratories and on new technology.
- Ensure all consumable components are procured on time to meet teaching and research project needs.
- Help to run practical classes under the direction of academic staff, including providing demonstrations on how to run experiments, explaining experimental techniques, and supporting students in undertaking complex or unusual experimental work across various labs.
- Maintaining the material and equipment register in the laboratory.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance to ensure practical classes and research projects are uninterrupted, including equipment calibration, replacing damaged components, and maintaining the cleanliness of equipment.
- Assist academic and technical staff in performing consulting, research, and calibration work.
- Assist the Technical Support Manager with external consultancy function, as required.
**Main skills/experience**:
At least one or more of the experiences listed below is required;
- Laboratory or workplace procedures - including preparation of essential documents.
- Handling of chemicals, materials and their storages
- Hands on experience on concrete and mortar preparations or equivalent experience on other material types
- Experience in setting up, operating and maintaining experimental apparatus.
The Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology is large and complex with six schools, research centres, engineering laboratories, IT laboratories and a large technical workshop. **QUALIFICATIONS**
- Completion of a Degree or a Diploma with relevant work related experience in a technical field.
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training will be considered.

**Remuneration**
**Base Salary Range**: $73,949 to $84,598 pa (HEW 5)
This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) **in addition** to the base salary.
