For over 95 years, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) has been delivering the finest care to the furthest corner of Australia. We provide aeromedical emergency retrieval, primary health care, mental health and dental services to the seven million Australians who live, work and travel in rural and remote areas – often where no other health services exist.
The RFDS Federation, based in Canberra, serves as the national coordinating body for the RFDS. We manage relationships with the Commonwealth Government, build a public policy voice for better health outcomes in rural and remote Australia, and support strategic coordination across the RFDS network. About the Role
The Head of Data and Analytics will lead the development, maintenance and optimisation of the RFDS national data collection systems and data warehouse. This pivotal role ensures the organisation meets its Commonwealth reporting obligations, supports high‑quality research, and provides the insights needed for service planning and population health analysis.
You will apply advanced technical, analytical and statistical expertise across diverse RFDS systems to extract, model and interpret data relating to service delivery, patient demographics and health outcomes. Your work will directly to inform RFDS strategic planning, government policy development, and advocacy—ultimately contributing to improved health outcomes for rural and remote Australians.
Key Responsibilities
Lead all Commonwealth contract reporting across Primary Evacuation, GP/Nursing Clinics, Dental Services and Mental Health Services.
Oversee the national RFDS data warehouse, including data extraction, integration and ongoing maintenance.
Ensure data quality, consistency, confidentiality and security across all national data systems.
Provide expert advice and support to system users and contribute to software development and system enhancement initiatives.
Develop and maintain business intelligence tools and methodologies to strengthen organisational analytics capability.
Establish and manage National Minimum Data Sets (NMDS) and associated data specifications for new RFDS programs.
Conduct high‑level analysis and research on RFDS health and transport data to identify trends and inform decision‑making.
Prepare and deliver internal and external reports, publications and data outputs, including those for public release.
Lead and contribute to data‑related projects, including research into rural and remote health and demographic trends.
Drive continuous improvement in data quality and systems, including reviewing processes, developing best‑practice standards and supporting data quality initiatives
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
* Tertiary qualifications in data analytics, data science or a related field
* Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining SQL data pipelines.
* Highly developed stakeholder communication and management skills.
* Demonstrated experience in managing data platform environments such as Snowflake, Fabric, Databricks and Redshift.
* Knowledge of data governance and cyber risk strategies
* Experience in maintaining a data warehouse, modelled data and cloud based platforms
* Experience using Tableau and similar data visualisation tools
* Experience using Alteryx and other data extraction tools across multiple systems and databases
* Highly developed research and analytical skills and ability to forecast trends and patterns from collected data.
* Proven experience in interpreting data and providing advice and recommendations on appropriate courses of action.
* Experience in the use of information management systems and databases.
* Highly developed oral and written communications skills.
* Demonstrated ability to produce clear concise and accurate assessments, reports and briefings in a range of forums.
* Proven experience in problem solving and the recommendation of effective solutions.
