Position: Antarctic Meteorologist
Locations: Hobart (preferred), Adelaide, and Melbourne
As the Antarctic Meteorologist, you will play a crucial role in Antarctic operational services throughout the year. Your responsibilities include supporting the development and delivery of training, competency assessments, and process improvements for a seasonal team of meteorologists deployed to various Antarctic locations. You will collaborate with the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) and the broader Australian Antarctic Program (AAP) to support weather-critical aviation, marine, and terrestrial operations.
This role typically involves standard business hours from an Australian office, with the possibility of joining operational rosters and responding out-of-hours during significant events. Schedules may vary due to Antarctic conditions. There may also be opportunities to deploy to Antarctica or to backfill roles supporting other meteorologists' deployments.
Your expertise in Antarctic meteorology will be vital in ensuring the Bureau provides reliable weather and ice services that enable Antarctic operations. You will issue products electronically and via briefings, and foster relationships across the Antarctic services value chain within the Bureau and with AAP stakeholders. You will also have opportunities to grow your competencies in Antarctic weather and ice services.
This is an ongoing position within the Ocean and Antarctic Services (OAS) team, reporting to the OAS Team Lead. OAS is part of the Marine and Antarctic Environmental Prediction Service (EPS MA) within the Community Services Group (CSG). Your colleagues will include subject matter experts in operational services, high-latitude meteorology, sea ice, and ocean prediction.
