Position Overview:
As the main point of contact for engagement with journalists, the media adviser is responsible leading, developing, and implementing Senator Henderson’s media and communications strategy.
Key duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
* Providing expert and timely advice on media and communications matters with a focus on effective engagement with audiences and constituents.
* Writing key pieces of correspondence including, but not limited to, media releases, speeches, statements, op-eds, reports, and newsletters.
* Creating and producing engaging content and messaging.
* Liaising with media organisations and other relevant stakeholders.
* Performing other duties as required by the senator.
The ideal applicant
* Significant prior experience in media/communications or public relations related roles.
* Highly motivated to support the work of the Coalition.
* Passionate about local and national news and current affairs, particularly as it relates to Senator Henderson’s shadow ministerial and parliamentary responsibilities.
* Possesses exceptional verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail and the ability to distil complex issues into easily understood messages.
* Self-motivated and able to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and in an environment of competing and changing priorities.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office software and other relevant office and content creation applications, as well as social media platforms.
* Possesses qualifications in journalism, public affairs, or another relevant discipline.
* Capacity to travel and work irregular hours (some evenings, early mornings and weekends) as required.
Employment Conditions
The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act (1984) and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-27 which include:
A commencing salary between $88,160 and $99,305 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.
An additional optional allowance of up to $37,153 may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work.
Studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).
An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.

The position is based in Geelong, VIC or Canberra, ACT.
An initial probationary period of three months applies.
The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check.
Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act.
The successful applicant will be required to comply with their obligations under the Behaviour Codes and Standards.
