The Opportunity_
We are seeking a motivated Design Manager who will be responsible for ensuring the quality, accuracy, and consistency of design documentation across all Hillam Architects projects. This role oversees the review of drawings and project deliverables to ensure compliance with Hillam' s drafting standards, architectural intent, constructability, and relevant codes and regulations.
The Design Manager provides mentorship, guidance, and feedback to project teams, working closely with the QA Manager and Project Directors to ensure that every project meets the firm’s quality and performance benchmarks.
Key Responsibilities_
Documentation Quality Reviews
Review all documentation across all projects to ensure compliance with Hillam drafting and presentation standardsCheck documentation for constructability, coordination and design complianceIdentify errors, inconsistencies, or risks and feedback to the project teamsSupport the development and ongoing refinement of the quality review process
Standards, Procedures & Compliance
Maintain and update office drafting and documentation standards.Ensure documentation aligns with NCC, Australian Standards, and internal QA requirements.Work with the Leadership to implement corrective measures based on audit outcomesChampion continuous improvement across design and documentation processes.
Mentoring, Training & Staff Development
Provide feedback and coaching to Project Leads and technical staff.Create training modules, and deliver focused training on drawing quality, coordination, and construction performance reviews by providing feedback on staff documentation quality and responsiveness to feedback
Constructability & Coordination
Review documentation to ensure buildability and coordination across consultant disciplines.Identify potential construction risks and recommend practical design solutions
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
Provide regular reporting on documentation quality metrics and recurring issues.Contribute to the development of KPIs and benchmarks for documentation performance.Recommend and implement improvements to systems and workflows.
Skills and Experience _
Tertiary qualification in Architecture (or equivalent experience).Minimum 8+ years' architectural experience, with proven documentation leadership experience.Experience conducting technical reviews and mentoring staff.Experience in large-scale multi-residential or mixed use projects preferred.Demonstrated ability to improve documentation quality and consistency across multiple projects.Strong knowledge of architectural documentation and detailing.In-depth understanding of the NCC, Australian Standards, and relevant codes.Excellent Revit and technical documentation skills.Strong communication, mentoring, and coordination abilities.Ability to identify quality issues and implement corrective measures.High attention to detail and commitment to design integrity.Exceptional organisation and coordination skills.Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.Task and time measurement and management.Flexible and adaptable.
