You will lead the horticulture strategy to ensure a year-round supply of host and nectar plants, while also providing essential oversight to our small-scale maintenance operations.

The Role: Horticulture Excellence & Operational Oversight
Reporting to the Park Manager, you will be the driving force behind the health, presentation, and sustainability of the sanctuary. You will lead a dedicated horticulture team and oversee our part-time maintenance function to ensure the entire park is safe and seamless.
Key Responsibilities
Garden & Horticulture Leadership
- Organic Excellence: Maintain all sanctuary gardens using strictly organic methods, ensuring the safety of our delicate butterfly populations.
- Plant Forecasting: Manage the nursery to grow and source host and nectar plants, ensuring a consistent supply to meet year-round demand.
- Pest Management: Monitor for pests and diseases using organic Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices.
- Team Management: Lead, coach, and roster garden staff, facilitating toolbox meetings and supporting staff development.
Maintenance Oversight
- Departmental Coordination: Provide oversight for the maintenance department (1 person, 3 days per week) to ensure park repairs and facilities are managed efficiently.
- Asset Care: Ensure garden tools, machinery, and general park equipment are serviced and in good working order.
- Project Support: Coordinate minor landscaping and yard repair tasks to maintain the sanctuary’s premium aesthetic.
Sustainability & Safety
- Resource Management: Lead initiatives in composting, waste reduction, and water efficiency.
- WHS Leadership: Model safe work behaviours, complete risk assessments, and ensure the safe storage of all garden and maintenance inputs.
The Ideal Leader
We are seeking a motivated individual who thrives in a tropical outdoor environment and takes pride in \"behind-the-scenes\" excellence.
- Experience: Demonstrated background in horticulture or garden management (supervisory experience is essential).
- Leadership: Ability to lead a small, diverse team and coordinate between departments like the Lab and Guest Services.
- Technical Skills: Solid knowledge of organic gardening principles and intermediate computer literacy (Excel, SharePoint, Office 365).
- Licensing: A current Australian Driver’s Licence is required.
- Attitude: A proactive, solution-oriented mindset that aligns with our CaPTAv8 Culture.
