The Role As the Assistant Manager at Zilm Pastoral, you are required to have outstanding knowledge of both the livestock and cropping sectors, with experience in irrigation. With a hands-on approach, you will be responsible for the daily management of staff, implementing tasks in conjunction with the Farm Manager, to achieve daily, weekly and monthly goals. Clear and concise communication, paired with strong record-keeping skills are an integral part of this intensive role. Exceptional animal husbandry skills, paired with extensive animal health knowledge and a pleasant demeanour, will stand you in good stead for this role, with an emphasis on low-stress stock handling. Working dogs are not a requirement for this role. A mechanical aptitude, ability to use varied agricultural equipment and a willingness to work towards our clients long term mixed farming goals are essential to this Assistant Manager’s role. Due to the seasonal nature of this enterprise, at times you will be required to work longer hours or weekends. The Employer: Zilm Pastoral & Ag Contracting is a family-owned and operated business, in Llowalong, East Gippsland. Their property portfolio consists of 3 properties, all within a convenient 40 minute drive of each other, encompassing a total of 3,200 acres. Our client runs a commercial herd of 800, Spring calving Angus cows, in addition to trading and fattening 1500 steers annually. The heifer portion of the livestock operation undergoes an intensive AI program, in their state-of-the-art Tepari pneumatic cattle yards, providing a safe and efficient working environment. The business envisages implementing a cattle feedlot as part of their long term livestock investment goals, a step on from their current containment feeding regime. Zilm Pastoral prides itself on purchasing modern farming equipment and vehicles. Their fleet comprises of a Kuhn 3000L spray unit, 6m Bednar seed drill, Fendt, CASE & Massey Fergusson tractors, McIntosh feed wagon, Krohn & Massey square balers, Pottinger Merger rake, 6m Power harrow, Anderson tube wrapper and telehander. The company has recently invested in a fertiliser spreader for both on and off farm use. The farm produces a significant amount of irrigated fodder, approximately 200 acres, inclusive of a centre pivot. Growing high quality lucerne hay and silage, as well as Maize corn, pastures are sown down to a ryegrass and clover mix, incorporating legumes and herbs. Data, record keeping and evaluation are paramount to this business, using programs such as Agriwebb and Optiweigh, allowing for seamless planning and implementation. Our client strives for progressive and forward planning practices, investing into Soil Carbon projects promoting overall general farm and environmental health, whilst being mindful of biosecurity.
