Position Overview:
The Horticultural Section Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing a defined area of crop production on a commercial vegetable farm. This includes the coordination of field teams, monitoring crop health, implementing daily tasks such as pruning, planting, harvesting, irrigation checks, and ensuring quality control standards are met. The supervisor will liaise directly with the farm manager and other section leaders to support efficient operations across the farm.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise day-to-day operations across designated crop sections
- Coordinate and oversee fieldworkers for tasks including planting, picking, pruning, trellising, weeding, harvesting, and clean-up
- Monitor irrigation and fertigation performance; report any issues to management
- Identify signs of pests, disease, or crop stress and escalate appropriately
- Maintain high standards of hygiene and food safety in line with supermarket and Freshcare requirements
- Communicate instructions clearly to workers from diverse backgrounds
- Complete daily task records and provide updates to the farm manager
- Support harvest planning and readiness reporting
- Operate within a team environment to achieve productivity and quality targets
Skills & Experience Required:
- At least 2 years' experience in a similar horticultural or farm production role
- Demonstrated ability to lead or supervise a small team
- Practical knowledge of vegetable crop management, pest/disease monitoring, and basic irrigation
- Understanding of on-farm hygiene, traceability, and food safety protocols
- Physically fit and capable of working in outdoor conditions
- Reliable and adaptable with a strong work ethic
- Basic English communication skills; ability to follow and give instructions
- Experience in multicultural work environments highly regarded
Desirable (Not Mandatory):
- Forklift licence
- Valid Australian driver’s licence
- First Aid certification
- Understanding of fertigation systems
- Experience with digital farm management or traceability systems
