Lead the connectivity backbone that powers our university's teaching, research, and digital future!
As Manager, Network and Telecommunications, you'll take the helm of a talented engineering team at a pivotal moment, guiding them toward contemporary platform engineering practices while ensuring the "always-on" connectivity that underpins our university's teaching, research, and operations.
This role balances hands-on team leadership with operational accountability for the University's network and telecommunications services. You will foster a high-performing, collaborative team culture while ensuring reliable service delivery and contributing to the adoption of modern engineering approaches across the function.
If you thrive on building high-performing teams, navigating change with clarity and purpose, and keeping complex enterprise networks running at the highest standard, this is your opportunity to make a lasting impact.
About the Role
Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, the Network and Telecommunications Manager provides people leadership to a team of network and telecommunications engineers operating in an environment of change and growth. You will balance hands-on team leadership with operational accountability for the University's network and telecommunications services, fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture while ensuring reliable service delivery. Your Key Responsibilities would include:
* Lead, coach, and develop a team of network and telecommunications engineers, setting clear expectations, building collective capability, and reducing single points of failure through cross-skilling
* Proactively manage team wellbeing and workload, particularly during periods of change or high operational demand
* Lead the team through organisational and technical change, providing clarity and maintaining engagement while translating broader organisational direction into practical, team-level priorities
* Maintain end-to-end accountability for the reliable delivery of network and telecommunications services across the University's campus, research, and cloud environments
* Oversee incident and problem management for network services, ensuring effective resolution, clear stakeholder communication, and professional documentation standards
* Manage vendor and supplier relationships, including service level agreements and performance reviews
* Guide the evolution of the network engineering function toward modern platform engineering practices, including Infrastructure as Code, DevSecOps integration, automation of provisioning and compliance workflows, and enhanced observability and monitoring tooling
* Contribute technical input on cloud and hybrid network connectivity, emerging technologies such as SD-WAN, SASE/SSE architectures, Wi-Fi 6E/7, and cloud-native networking patterns
About Us
Macquarie University's Information Technology function plays a pivotal role in enabling the University's mission across teaching, research, and engagement. The network and telecommunications platform are the essential connectivity backbone, supporting hybrid learning environments, data centre services, cloud-connected architectures, and the security infrastructure that protects the entire University community. This leadership appointment is critical for maintaining service continuity, managing growing bandwidth demands, and delivering the IT capital program that underpins Macquarie's digital strategy.
About You (Selection Criteria)
You are an experienced people leader with a genuine passion for developing teams and navigating organisational change. You bring strong operational instincts honed in complex enterprise network environments, combined with an appetite for continuous improvement and modern engineering practices. You communicate with clarity to both technical and non-technical audiences, and you understand that great infrastructure starts with great people.
* Tertiary qualifications in a related field, or equivalent knowledge, skills, and experience, with a demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
* Proven experience leading, coaching, and developing a team of technology professionals, including performance management, career development, and team wellbeing
* Demonstrated experience leading a technical team through organisational or operational transformation while maintaining engagement and delivery
* Strong understanding of network and telecommunications infrastructure and operations in a complex enterprise environment, including campus LAN/WAN, data centre networking, firewall and perimeter security, wireless platforms, VoIP/UC, and DNS/DHCP/IPAM services
* Experience as a service owner or operational manager with end-to-end accountability for network or infrastructure services, including incident, problem, and change management (e.g., ITIL)
* Proven ability to manage vendor and supplier relationships, including service level agreements and performance oversight
* Familiarity with contemporary engineering practices such as Infrastructure as Code (Ansible, Terraform), DevSecOps, observability platforms, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud networking concepts across AWS, Azure, or similar platforms
