Job Summary

Following a successful business case for the development of the pharmacy service at Cheswold Park Hospital, this is an exciting opportunity for an experienced pharmacy technician ready for a new challenge. You will work closely with the Chief Pharmacy Technician to set up and establish new systems and processes, collaborating with teams at Cheswold Park Hospital and the wider Trust pharmacy team to embed the pharmacy service.

Standard working pattern is 9 am to 5 pm with weekend commitment. This post is part‐time, 3 days per week and will be based at Cheswold Park Hospital, Doncaster, with occasional cross‐cover at our Pharmacy bases in Barnsley and Wakefield. We support flexible working to promote a healthy work‐life balance.

Main duties of the job

This postholder will co‐ordinate all aspects of patient medicines, communicating effectively to ensure a safe, seamless and integrated transfer of care for our patients.

Key Result Areas
* Supporting clinical teams with the supply, storage and management of medicines within inpatient areas.
* Developing & establishing new pharmacy systems and processes at Cheswold Park Hospital.
* Completing medicines history/reconciliation when patients are admitted into our care.
* Providing information to patients & carers about their medicines and supporting adherence and understanding.
* Working closely with clinical teams to plan and support timely leave and discharge, utilising near‐patient dispensing processes.
* Supporting transfer of care into other settings.
* Accurate checking of medication for leave and discharge.
* Supporting the training and development of trainees.
* Participating in the weekend and bank holiday rota.
* Ensuring medicines are available for leave, discharge and self‐medication in a timely manner.
* Participation in the operation of the Medicines Management Service at ward level, maintaining competencies in all aspects.
* Providing a supply and topping‐up service at ward/team base level.
* Assessing the suitability of patients' own drugs on admission for continued use and arranging safe disposal of those that are not.
* Completing pharmacy profiles ready for clinical checking by the ward pharmacist.
* Performing drug transcription error reporting.
* Preparing reports for costing and usage.
* Working with ward pharmacists and ward staff to determine appropriate pharmaceutical stock levels and producing/updating ward‐stock lists.
* Providing advice to ward staff on safe and secure storage and handling of pharmaceuticals.
* Specialised medication counselling (e.g., inhaler use).
* Medicines reconciliation against home medicines and GP records.
* Supporting and participating in extended technician roles as they develop in the trust.
* Covering for all technicians within the service, ensuring appropriate knowledge to dispense and accurate checking for all units.
* Covering the technician's role in other areas of the trust where appropriate.
* Assisting in the distribution to all wards and departments of approved policies and procedures by the Drug and Therapeutics Trust Action Group.
* Ensuring the receipt, processing, storage and stock control of medicines and other supplies are properly managed.
* Participating in the supply of Clozapine to a specific group of patients, ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures.
* Ensuring compliance with self‐administration of medicines and the relevant policy in allocated wards and departments.
* Responding to enquiries and requests from staff, patients and carers in accordance with competence and departmental policy.
* Assisting the pharmacy management team in developing and monitoring SOPs.
* Training others in routine duties of the department and providing services when you are absent.
* Acting as a mentor and providing support to junior staff as required.
* Reporting incidents within the pharmacy team and any witnessed on wards/departments using the computerised reporting system.
* Using pharmacy and other computer systems in the course of performing these duties.
* Complying with the Trust's Medicine Code.
* Dispensing medication for in‐out, day and hostel patients, ready for final accuracy check including compliance aids.
* Maintaining accreditation and performing the final accuracy check of prescriptions according to departmental protocol.
Person Specification

Experience

* Demonstrable experience as a pharmacy technician.
* Experience of working in a hospital pharmacy.
* Accuracy checking.
* Hospital pharmacy experience.
* Setting up ward‐based pharmacy services.
* Provision of medicines management to new services and linking with community pharmacies.
* Discharge planning.
* Self‐administration of medicines.
* Specific experience of working in a mental health environment.

Training

* Nationally recognised accuracy checking qualification or ability to demonstrate competencies at this level.
* Accredited checking technician status.
* Medicines management training (desirable).
* Team‐leading training (desirable).

Qualifications

* NVQ Level 3, BTec, or similar nationally recognised qualification in pharmaceutical sciences.
* UK Professional registration as a Pharmacy Technician.
* NVQ A1 assessor qualification (desirable).

* Supervisory skills.
* Pharmaceutical waste management.
* Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
* Regulations on controlled drugs in primary and secondary care.
* Understanding of mental health issues, mental illnesses and their treatment.
* Good communication skills, both oral and written.
* Good time‐management and organisational skills.
* Ability to work independently.
* Good computer/IT skills.
* Hospital computer systems (JAC) (desirable).
* Knowledge and experience of checking dispensed prescriptions (desirable).
* Ward‐based medicines management audit (desirable).

Physical Attributes

* Ability to undertake the duties and demands of the post; satisfactory sickness record over the previous 2 years (subject to fairness and equality of opportunity).
* Able to work within the whole trust boundaries.
* Current driving licence and access to a car during the working day (desirable).
