About the Company
Ahrens is a fifth-generation, Australian family-owned company, with over 120 years’ experience in delivering a wide range of high-quality and cost-effective products and projects across Australia, with footprints overseas.
From humble beginnings in regional South Australia, we have grown into a full Construction, Engineering, Mining & Industrial Services, Sheds & Silos and Water Storage company which provides complete turnkey project solutions, supported by our 26 divisions.
As we continue to evolve, so does our need to heavily invest in our people and facilities for continued success.
With 450 employees across our WA divisions and close to 2,000 nationally, we are united by a positive and supportive team culture, a commitment to look after each other, be the best we can and represent a diverse range of backgrounds and skills. In return, we reward those who passionately work with us towards our vision.
About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Estimator to join our fabrication team in Kwinana. This is a hands-on, commercially focused role at the heart of our project pipeline — you’ll be the person who turns complex scopes and drawings into accurate, competitive bids that protect margin and set projects up for success.
You’ll work closely with our workshop, QA/QC, and procurement teams, and will own the estimating process end-to-end: from first receiving a set of drawings through to handover of awarded work to the delivery team.
Key Accountabilities
* Prepare estimates, quotes, and tenders from drawings, specifications, and RFQs
* Complete detailed take-offs and labour build-ups across fabrication, welding, machining, assembly, coatings, and testing
* Price complex scopes including heat exchangers, pressure vessels, piping spools, and SMP items
* Obtain and assess supplier and subcontract pricing — materials, NDT, heat treatment, coatings, and transport
* Define scope, inclusions, exclusions, and assumptions with clarity
* Ensure pricing accounts for QA/QC, ITPs, MDRs, testing, and compliance requirements
* Identify technical and commercial risks, particularly around code compliance, materials, tolerances, and rework exposure
* Highlight scope gaps and variation risks before they become problems
* Align estimates with workshop capability, sequencing, and constraints
* Provide thorough handover of awarded work, including key assumptions, risks, and cost drivers
* Maintain estimating records, cost data, and tender registers
* Review estimate vs actual performance to drive continuous improvement
Essential Criteria
* Proven estimating experience in pressure equipment, piping, or heavy fabrication
* Strong ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications
* Solid understanding of fabrication processes, welding, and material behaviour (carbon and exotic alloys)
* Strong commercial awareness — you understand risk, margin, and what makes a bid win or lose
* Ability to price QA/QC, NDT, testing, and documentation requirements accurately
* Proficient in Excel and estimating systems
Desirable Criteria
* Trade or engineering background (fitter/boilermaker, mechanical engineer, or similar)
* Experience with ASME, AS1210, or other pressure vessel and piping codes
* Experience in mining, oil & gas, or chemical processing industries
