Offer Description
Exciting PhD Opportunity: Analytical Methods for Vaccine–Antigen Interactions
Institution: University of Melbourne in partnership with Zoetis
Location: Bio21 Institute, University of Melbourne & Zoetis Parkville Site
Duration: 3–4 years (standard PhD)
Project Overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated PhD candidate to develop innovative, animal-free analytical methods for detecting interactions between Zoetis clostridial vaccines and their target antigens.
Current rabbit-based testing methods have significant limitations. This project will establish a quantitatively accurate, non-animal alternative that meets regulatory and ethical standards whilst maintaining scientific rigour.
You will first survey the literature for alternative analytical approaches for vaccine–antigen quantification. You will then learn current industry best practice methods involving ELISA assays and biosensor technology at Zoetis before developing and evaluating new quantitative mass spectrometry methods.
Using a broad range of industry vaccine and antigen samples (not live bacteria or toxins) you will assess the specificity and selectivity, as well as the sensitivity, precision and accuracy of both established and new methods.
You will work with local and international Zoetis team members, as well as researchers from the Bio21 Institute, including the Mass Spectrometry platform. The PhD will potentially involve a visit to an international Zoetis site.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for candidates with:
Bachelor's degree (Honours) or Master's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
Strong laboratory skills and attention to experimental detail.
Experience with analytical techniques (ELISA, mass spectrometry, or immunoassays preferred).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in both academic and industry environments.
Problem-solving mindset and adaptability to evolving project directions.
What We Offer
Dual Supervision: Expert guidance from University of Melbourne and Zoetis scientists.
Flexible Working Arrangements: Split time between Bio21 and Zoetis Parkville site, tailored to experimental needs.
Access to World-Class Facilities: Bio21 Mass Spectrometry facility and Zoetis analytical laboratories.
Industry Experience: Valuable exposure to pharmaceutical development and regulatory considerations and experience working with local and international Zoetis team members.
Competitive Stipend.
