About us: The Mental Health Acute inpatient units (MHL2 & MHL1) are designed equally to provide a safe and therapeutic environment for people with acute mental health problems requiring treatment in an inpatient setting and who cannot be managed in a less restrictive environment in the community. The Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 10-bed ward located on Level 2 of the AAMHIS and is a specialised unit within the Cairns Hospital. PICU provides intensive psychiatric care for patients experiencing acute mental health crises or severe psychiatric symptoms.
