Lead Family Practitioner – Putting Families First
Full-time, 38 hours a week, Fixed Term for 24 months.
This is an Aboriginal Designated Position, classified under 'special measures' of Section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.
About the Role
The Lead Family Practitioner is responsible for providing culturally safe, complex care coordination of Aboriginal young people and their families who have come into contact with the Child Protection and Justice systems.
Families have been exposed to a higher incidences of family violence, offending behaviour, contact with child protection, and other harmful experiences, as well as sustained contact with the service system.
The Lead Family Practitioner will work in collaboration with a range of services to provide holistic support to Aboriginal families and extended family members in cultural appropriate environments that support their emotional, developmental, and cultural wellbeing.
The role is grounded in the principles of Aboriginal self-determination and a commitment to improving outcomes for Aboriginal children.
The Lead Family Practitioner will work closely with young people and their parent's, the Department of Justice and Community Safety, Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH), and other internal and external stakeholders to promote the best positive outcomes for Aboriginal families.
About You
To excel in this position, you should possess the following qualifications and qualities:
* You are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
* A recognised qualification such as Diploma in Community Services, or a related field (Diploma level minimum) or demonstrated skills and experienced in a similar field.
* The Lead Family Practitioner will work intensively and collaboratively, whilst ensuring Aboriginal ways of working is embedded to meet the needs of families, whilst utilising a range of evidence informed practice elements, which include generational trauma.
* A sound knowledge of Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-Operative services and local Aboriginal community including issues that have an impact on the safety and wellbeing of Aboriginal families.
* Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, intergenerational trauma, and its impacts on children and families.
* A strengths-based approach that is client centred, respects self-determination and promotes resilience.
* Proven ability to encourage families to engage and participate in the program to achieve their identified goals.
* Capacity to provide practical support and encouraging positive behaviour change through modelling and personal engagement.
* Identify and monitor families risks and needs based on a risk and needs assessment, coordinate and prioritise culturally safe and appropriate referrals, access to services, and activities.
* Focus on assertive outreach to build respectful relationships with family members, and enable families to receive the right support, at the right time and in the right place.
* A demonstrated understanding of the Child, Youth and Families Act 2005.
* Proven ability to maintain a high standard of confidentiality, professional boundaries and compliance with program, legislative and organisational requirements.
* Demonstrated experience in case management, including risk assessment, managing referrals, coordinating care team meetings, liaising with service providers, and applying culturally responsive case work practices.
* Strong communication, advocacy, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with Aboriginal children, young people and families.
* Sound organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing demands, meet Ability to work co-operatively and effectively in a team environment.
