The Directorate of Navy Safety and Environment works across a range of specialisations including work health and safety, occupational hygiene, environment protection, and compliance and risk management systems.
We are an integrated workforce which includes military and civilian personnel with highly specialised skills and deep maritime experience.
As the Assistant Director Safety, you will lead an innovative team responsible for providing Workplace Health and Safety subject matter expertise, advisory and analysis services to Navy. You will advise stakeholders on the application of legislative and regulatory information in the WHS Act, as well as Defence and Navy safety doctrine.
Responsibilities
* Leading a high performing team to provide advice that guides and influences the practice of safety professionals in Navy;
* Providing specialist advice on the development and review of safety policy and approach to safety risk management;
* Representing Navy Safety & Environment in working groups and other forums;
* Contribute to and provide advice to the senior executive on regulatory matters, in both written and verbal formats;
* Incident investigations and other technical assessments.
About our Team
The Navy Safety and Environment (NavySafE) team is part of the Navy Engineering Division and works across a range of specialisations including work health and safety, systems safety, occupational hygiene, and environment.
NavySafE is accountable for developing and sustaining Navy's Safety and Environment Management Systems and assuring Navy senior leadership that these systems are effectively implemented and maintained.
Our Ideal Candidate
* Demonstrated high-level management and stakeholder engagement skills;
* The ability to understand and provide analysis on complex health and safety issues at the strategic level across domestic and international jurisdictions;
* A well-developed understanding of the system safety discipline as well as the regulatory and legislative context in which it operates;
* The ability to understand and apply the WHS Act and Regulations through Navy's safety policy in the context of maritime safety issues;
* Understand and apply the requirements of the Defence safety governance regimes (e.g. explosive ordnance, aviation, seaworthiness management), ensuring their specific requirements that apply to Navy capabilities are incorporated in the safety management policy and the guidance for development;
* The capacity to understand the interdependencies within the team, the Navy, wider Defence and external agencies;
* A demonstrated commitment to the outcomes achieved as a result of effective maritime safety management systems, and the ability to inspire others similarly;
* A practical, results-focused approach, using excellent judgement.
