The Robert Menzies Institute (RMI) is Australia's leading centre dedicated to promoting the success of Australian liberal democracy and its values through historical literacy, research, education and public engagement. Located in the historic Old Quadrangle at the University of Melbourne, RMI delivers national exhibitions and educational programs, publishes books, hosts major lectures and produces the Afternoon Light podcast. As the Institute enters its next strategic phase (2026–2031), philanthropy will play a central role in expanding impact, building endowment, and delivering major national initiatives including ANZUS 75, The Menzies Forum, the Liberal Democratic Inheritance Initiative, and the Forging Australia conference series.
Role Description
The Fundraising Manager will design and execute a sophisticated development strategy to grow major gifts, corporate partnerships and annual giving. This is a strategic, externally focused role suited to a relationship-driven professional who understands major donor cultivation and enjoys working closely with senior stakeholders. The successful candidate will work directly with the CEO, Board Directors and high-net-worth supporters to expand RMI's philanthropic base and secure transformational gifts.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and implement a 3–5 year fundraising strategy aligned with RMI's strategic plan.
* Build a structured major gifts program (five- and six-figure giving).
* Grow annual appeals (EOFY and Christmas).
* Identify grant opportunities (foundations and trusts).
Major Donor Cultivation
* Manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects.
* Prepare tailored proposals and briefing documents.
* Coordinate donor meetings with CEO and Board.
* Design stewardship programs to increase retention and upgrade giving.
Campaigns & Appeals
* Lead planning and execution of annual campaigns.
* Develop compelling case for support materials.
* Oversee donor communications and impact reporting.
Events & Engagement
* Leverage RMI events, exhibitions and lectures for donor cultivation.
* Coordinate targeted donor dinners and private briefings.
* Support CEO in high-level donor engagement strategy.
Systems & Governance
* Track KPIs and provide monthly revenue reporting.
* Ensure compliance with ACNC and fundraising regulations.
Qualifications
* 5+ years' experience in working with Major Donors and cultivating strong relationships in philanthropy and charitable giving
* Strong Communication skills, including the ability to create compelling proposals and deliver impactful presentations
* Demonstrated success securing major gifts ($25k+).
* Experience in managing Annual Giving campaigns and working within the charitable or nonprofit sector
* Demonstrated ability to develop and implement successful fundraising strategies
* Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders with high levels of emotional intelligence and discretion
* Knowledge of fundraising tools and donor management systems is an advantage
* Experience working with Boards or senior executives
* Experience in education, policy, or cultural institutions is preferred.
