Position: School Officer – Assisting Student Learning (First Nations Education)
Commencing Date: 19 January ****
Tenure: Fixed Term, Term Time – 20 hours per week (Monday to Friday) – Expires 4 December ****
Salary Range: $*****–$***** per hour (pending experience)
Closing Date: 20 October ****
About the role
The primary purpose of the School Officer (ASL – First Nations Education) is to collaborate with teachers to provide advice, practical support and guidance to assist First Nation students with learning and development. The role supports students with special needs, creates an inclusive environment and promotes independence and self-advocacy skills.
Key Accountabilities
Work in classrooms, providing support for First Nation students.
Liaise with teachers to determine progress and wellbeing.
Assist transition from community to school and serve as a positive role model.
Provide pastoral care and advocacy for students and families.
Raise awareness among staff about First Nation students' backgrounds.
Maintain relationships with local First Nations community groups and Traditional Land Owners.
Coordinate and promote First Nations cultural education events and programs.
Learning and Teaching Support
Assist teachers in the classroom.
Support teaching team with classroom resources.
Provide personalized support (mobility, communication) as required.
Prepare support materials and resources.
Collect data for teacher analysis (anecdotal notes on performance, work habits, behaviour).
Inclusive Education
Assist individuals or small groups with inclusive teaching practices.
Support behaviour management and development of social and classroom skills.
Pastoral Care
Monitor and support student wellbeing under pastoral guidance.
Promote self-esteem and social interaction skills.
Provide personal care and communication support.
Professional Development
Share learning with colleagues.
Seek opportunities for professional learning via internal and external training.

Organise and prioritise tasks and set priorities to meet deadlines.
Demonstrate competence with personal computer and relevant software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Experience working with students with disabilities or special needs is desirable.
Mandatory Criteria
Current Working with Children Suitability Card – Blue Card before commencement.
Current Driver's Licence.
Ability to travel within the Catholic Diocese of Townsville.
Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role safely.
Additional Qualifications
Cert III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education, Cert III in Children's Services or Education Support or commitment to completing this qualification.
First Aid qualification or willingness to complete.
