About The Role Manage the operations of the Smart Materials and Surfaces Research Group and develop and implement practices and procedures to support laboratory activities. 
Lead and supervise a team of research staff and students within the laboratories while carrying out general laboratory management. 
Focus on achieving maximum research efficiency for one of the largest research groups at UNSW. 
Report to Scientia Professor Justin Gooding and manage one direct report. 
Salary: $127K - $143K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading 
Term: Fixed Term – 3 years 
Hours: Full-time (35 hours per week) 
Key Responsibilities Develop and implement guidelines, processes and procedures that align and support the laboratory activities of the Smart Materials and Surfaces Research Group. 
Supervise research staff and students, including monitoring and facilitating undergraduate and postgraduate student research projects. 
Consult, liaise and build strong relationships with stakeholders to achieve research outcomes. 
Assist students and staff in editing research publications to facilitate successful publication. 
Design, implement and manage laboratory databases and information systems; analyze and report on research performance and metrics; recommend initiatives to improve performance. 
Represent the laboratory group at UNSW work areas, advisory groups, meetings, and lead/manage other Centre-wide activities as required. 
Adhere to OH&S; principles and ensure their implementation by group members. 
Provide support on research projects aligned with the appointee’s skill set and group interests, with potential to lead to journal publications. 
Manage a tissue culture facility, including inventory control and stocking of essential consumables to support uninterrupted research. 
Cooperate with university health and safety policies and maintain safety for yourself and others. 
Align with and demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values; identify and control hazards and risks within your area of responsibility. 
About The Successful Applicant A PhD in Chemistry with substantial post-graduate experience, including highly developed chemical synthesis skills. 
Familiarity with synthetic chemistry, cell biology and measurement science is desirable but not required. 
Experience managing inventory and purchases via Jaggaer or equivalent. 
Experience handling sensitive information and preparing documents for ROI and IP applications. 
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail; ability to influence senior management and stakeholders. 
Strong influencing and consultation skills; ability to work with diverse stakeholders including industry partners and external collaborators. 
Ability to work collaboratively within a team and independently while managing competing demands. 
Understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values, plus relevant policies and guidelines. 
Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to training.
