The Legal Practitioner will deliver high-quality legal advice and representation in various areas, including domestic violence orders, child protection, victims of crime compensation, and family law. This role involves managing a caseload from initial advice to hearings and negotiated outcomes.
To be successful in this position, you must be able to provide culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, and community-aligned legal advice. You will also partner with Client Service Officers to support clients with safety planning, housing access, transport, referrals, and court attendance.
This is a meaningful and diverse role that contributes to early intervention efforts through legal education workshops and outreach services. You will participate in weekly outreach visits to remote communities to deliver legal services and stakeholder engagement.
You are expected to maintain accurate and timely records using Actionstep and comply with reporting requirements. Strong professional links with courts, police, child protection services, health providers, and local NGOs are essential for success in this position.
A commitment to upholding professional and ethical standards of legal practice and maintaining continuous professional development is required.

Key Responsibilities:

* Manage a caseload from initial advice through to hearings and negotiated outcomes.
* Ensure that legal advice is culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, and aligned with community expectations.
* Partner with CSOs to support clients with safety planning, housing access, transport, referrals, and court attendance.
* Contribute to early intervention efforts, including legal education workshops and outreach services.
* Participate in weekly outreach visits to remote communities to deliver legal services and stakeholder engagement.
* Maintain strong professional links with courts, police, child protection services, health providers, and local NGOs.
* Uphold professional and ethical standards of legal practice and maintain continuous professional development.
Selection Criteria
Eligibility to hold a restricted or unrestricted practising certificate in the Northern Territory.
Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultures and communities, and the issues affecting them.
Demonstrated commitment to meeting the legal needs of disadvantaged groups, particularly Aboriginal victim-survivors of family violence and those living in remote Aboriginal communities.
Ability to provide high quality legal advice and casework, particularly in family law areas, with excellent written communication skills.
Excellent oral communication and listening skills, with ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people and those who have experienced trauma.
Ability to work as a member of a small multi-disciplinary team, as well as independently with minimal supervision.
Good understanding of organisational management of legal practice, well-developed time management skills, and ability to manage client matters and meet deadlines.
Current NT Driver's License, NT Ochre Card, and completion of National Police Check and Aboriginal Land Permit requirements.
Post-admission experience in a community legal or family violence setting for one or more years.
Experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
