About the role
We're offering an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist in New Zealand to become an integral part of our dedicated multidisciplinary team. In this pivotal role, you'll help shape and deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to our patients.
Your key responsibilities will include conducting comprehensive psychiatric and risk assessments, providing clinical leadership in medical care and physical health management, working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure holistic care, supporting the development of junior staff and students through teaching and mentorship, and coordinating effective discharge planning in partnership with community services.
About the Team
The Wellington South Community Mental Health Team is a friendly and supportive group that values the importance of enjoying our work (mahi) as a key to delivering excellent care. We provide secondary mental health services to adults aged 18 and over who are experiencing psychological distress. Our care is community-based, enabling people to access support while maintaining their daily routines, with inpatient care available when clinically necessary.
Our service is designed for adults (18+) experiencing moderate to severe psychological distress that significantly impacts daily functioning or presents ongoing risks to themselves or others. Beyond direct patient care, we also offer guidance and support to primary healthcare providers, such as GP practices.

Salary & benefits
Base salary: NZD $170,000 – $250,000+ (based on the ASMS MECA)
Additional compensation: On-call, penal rates and availability allowances where applicable
You'll also receive:
* Six weeks of annual leave per year
* Twelve public holidays (plus time in lieu if rostered on)

* Annual CME allowance (up to NZD $16,000)
* CME leave (up to 10 days per year)
* Up to 12 months parental leave including fourteen weeks paid parental leave

What you need to work here
To practise as a Psychiatrist in New Zealand, you must be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
Most international applicants will need a recognised postgraduate qualification comparable to Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP), or another comparable specialist qualification. Some applicants may be eligible to work under supervision while obtaining vocational registration.
