Overview
The Tasmanian Health Service (THS) is recruiting registrars for the Tasmanian Anaesthetic Training Program (TATP) for the 2027 cohort. The TATP delivers anaesthesia training across the three THS hospitals – Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH), Launceston General Hospital (LGH) and North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) – and offers a range of appointment types including length‐of‐training, provisional fellowship, fixed‐term and rural‐generalist anaesthesia positions.
Training Opportunities
* Length‐of‐training appointments: 2‐year contracts with the option of extension within a 5‐year framework to complete 4 years of basic and advanced training.
* Provisional fellowship positions (8 per year) advertised separately in Hobart and Launceston.
* Fixed‐term contracts (typically 12 months) for provisional fellows, non‐training registrars, international medical graduates and rural‐generalist (RGA) trainees.
* RGA trainees receive a separate Statement of Duties but are coordinated by the TATP and may train at any of the three hospitals.
* Flexible training options: parental leave, extended/part‐time training and leave of absence are supported within the TATP framework.
Responsibilities
* Day‐to‐day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the hospital.
* Providing after‐hours emergency cover as required by the Department of Anaesthesia.
* Participating in protected weekly education, state‐wide teaching sessions, clinical audits, research activities and trainee‐led teaching.
* Rotating between the three THS anaesthesia training sites to achieve the required volume of practice.
Essential Requirements
* General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
* Successful completion of pre‐employment checks (crime, or related checks as listed below).
* Ability to start work on 1 February 2027 and meet all visa, AHPRA registration and quarantine requirements by that date.
Desirable Requirements
* At least 24 months of junior medical officer experience.
* Experience or interest in regional, rural and remote practice settings (for RGA applicants).
* Completion of accredited ALS 2 course within 52 weeks prior to commencing RGA training.
Selection Process
* Curriculum Vitae – 30% of the score; based on academic achievements, interest in Tasmania/rural medicine and anaesthetic experience.
* Selection criteria – 30% of the score; responses to seven de‐identified criteria.
* Interview – 30% of the score.
* General impression – 10% of the score.
* References and self‐reflection are considered but not scored.
Salary & Employment Details
* Annual salary: $134,930 – $189,005, in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022.
* Contract: fixed‐term, full‐time, day work; 76 hours per fortnight plus 10 hours protected training per fortnight (pro‐rata). Commencing 1 February 2027 until 7 February 2028, with potential extension to a 2‐year appointment if positions are available.
* Classification: Medical Practitioner Level 5‐11 (Registrar) under the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022.
