The Role & The Team This hands-on position leads the design, architecture, and delivery of the insurance data platform during a major core insurance platform replacement. This role is critical to shaping how data is collected, stored, governed, and used across the organisation, with a strong focus on enabling advanced analytics, reporting, AI, and data sharing.
The individual in this role will lead a team of engineers while also directly contributing to the platform's architecture, roadmap, and implementation – with a focus on delivering business value.
Responsibilities Contribute to the end-to-end design of a cloud-based data platform, incorporating data lakehouse principles (e.g. Delta Lake on ADLS). Contribute to the architecture and define the design for data ingestion, transformation, storage, and access – including raw, silver, and gold layers. Align platform design with business use cases across Actuarial, Finance, Claims, Product, Fraud, and Partners. Delivery & Implementation Lead the delivery of data migration, integration of legacy and modern operational platforms, and onboarding of new data sources. Develop and enforce standards for pipeline design, technical metadata, documentation, and data modelling. Oversee technical choices (e.g. tools, frameworks, storage formats, orchestration). Leadership & Team Management Manage and mentor a team of data engineers and contractors. Collaborate with business stakeholders, IT, and external partners to align delivery with strategic goals. Act as the bridge between business needs and technical implementation. Data Governance & Quality Partner with the Data Governance Lead, IT Security, and Risk & Governance to embed data governance, privacy, and quality practices. Ensure proper handling of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data, including policy docs, images, and telematics data. Enable Analytics, AI & Reporting Design and deliver core datasets to power business intelligence (e.g., dealer dashboards, financial and management reporting). Build data models and data marts that support financial reconciliation, fleet aggregation, fraud detection, claims analysis, pricing, and customer insights. Support advanced analytics and predictive models (e.g., churn prediction, fraud risk scoring, claims triage, claims straight through processing) through integrating outputs into operational systems. Contribute to the design of semantic layers, feature stores, and self-service analytics frameworks. Your Skills & Experience 7+ years of experience in data engineering, architecture, or platform delivery, ideally within insurance or financial services. Deep knowledge of Azure data services, including: Experience leading the design and implementation of a data warehouse/lakehouse architecture. Strong hands-on knowledge of SQL, Python, and data modelling. Experience with data migration, legacy system integration, and evolving schemas. Highly Regarded: Familiarity with Guidewire or core insurance platforms. Knowledge of data governance tools (e.g., Microsoft Purview), data sharing frameworks, or data mesh/fabric principles. Excellent communication skills and ability to engage with business, technical, and executive stakeholders.
