Primary objective
The Project Officer will work in collaboration with Menzies School of Health Research, the Aboriginal Interpreter Service (AIS), and
key stakeholders to enhance effective communication between healthcare workers and Aboriginal patients, their families/carers
to facilitate improved intercultural communication training for health care providers and support the Aboriginal health workforce.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Implement and advocate for the Communicate Study activities, in partnership with the multidisciplinary teams at Alice Springs
Hospital and develop communication tools and resources for healthcare workers and conduct service information sessions for
multi-disciplinary teams to promote cultural safety initiatives.
1. Work with the Alice Springs Hospital clinical and corporate management to ensure the delivery of culturally safe health care by
implementing Communicate Study activities, including but not limited to intercultural communication training, and supporting
the First Nations workforce comprising assistance to access Continuing Professional Development and certification
opportunities.
1. Facilitate qualitative interview data collection with healthcare works and First Nations peoples in hospital, as well as facilitating
collection of quantitative data on interpreter uptake, self-discharge and health outcomes. Ensure data collection and storage in
accordance with ethical and cultural guidelines.
1. Participate in work unit and research group meetings, business planning, regular reporting, staff essential training and quality
improvement activities and meeting with the Communicate Study team on a regular basis.
1. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces while fostering a positive workplace culture.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated understanding of social, cross-cultural, and communication issues affecting health service delivery to Aboriginal
people in Central Australia, with the ability to interact effectively across diverse cultures.
2. Demonstrated knowledge and application of culturally safe practices to support Aboriginal clients, influencing practice to reduce
risk and improve outcomes.
3. Proven high-level awareness of Central Australian language and communication differences.
4. Demonstrated experience in training and presenting to multidisciplinary audiences, with strong written communication and
reporting skills
5. Highly developed negotiation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage multidisciplinary staff, communities, and
Aboriginal stakeholders.
6. Demonstrated ability to work proactively, manage multiple tasks independently, and maintain initiative and enthusiasm.
7. Strong organisational, time management, and computer/database skills, with flexibility to manage changing priorities and deliver
quality work under pressure.
8. Demonstrated problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop strategies, implement evaluation tools, and drive service
improvement.
Desirable
1. Qualifications in a relevant field such as education, training and assessment (TAE) or a demonstrated ability to speak a Central
Australian Aboriginal Language.
