UTS acknowledges the Gadigal people, the Boorooberongal people of the Dharug Nation, the Bidjigal people and the Gamaygal people upon whose ancestral lands our University stands. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders past, present and emerging, acknowledging them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for these lands.
Our vision is to be a leading public university of technology recognised for our global impact. We are a dynamic and innovative university, ranked by the Times Higher Education as Australia's top young university, and located on Gadigal land (Ultimo, NSW).
About the School
The UTS School of Computer Science is a powerhouse of innovation and real-world engagement. Ranked #2 in Australia for Computer Science, the School is forward-thinking, future-focused, and deeply connected to industry. We empower students and researchers to imagine, design, and build the technology of tomorrow.
About the Faculty
UTS Faculty of Engineering warmly invites applications from underrepresented groups including women, Indigenous Australians, people with visible and non-visible disability, neurodiverse individuals, those who identify as LGBTQIA+ and applicants from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. UTS was one of the first Australian institutions to receive the Athena SWAN Bronze Accreditation for our commitment to action addressing gender equity in the STEMM disciplines. We're actively creating a more inclusive and supportive community through initiatives like Flexible Working, Wingara Indigenous Employment Strategy, LGBTQIA+ community support, Multicultural Women's Network and the UTS Access and Inclusion Plan.
About the Role
The Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) will work with the CI at UTS across the full research lifecycle of the ARC Discovery Project "The Paradox of Generative Data: Ensuring Security and Privacy". The PDRA's responsibilities span three interconnected areas:
System Design and Synthetic Data Generation — The PDRA will contribute to the architectural design of the synthetic data generation pipeline, including the selection and evaluation of generative models (e.g. GANs, diffusion models, LLMs) and the development of frameworks to assess data fidelity, utility, and privacy risk.
Security and Privacy Methods — The PDRA will develop and evaluate algorithms to improve the security and privacy of generative data outputs, including privacy-preserving techniques and threat modelling for synthetic data misuse scenarios.
Proactive and Multimodal Detection — As the primary focus, the PDRA will design and implement proactive detection methods to identify manipulations and integrity violations in generative data across modalities (text, image, and structured data), contributing directly to Task 3 of the project workplan.
In addition, the PDRA will also co-supervise HDR students.
About You
The incumbent is expected to have a deep understanding of generative AI models and their associated security and privacy risks. The incumbent will also have a developing record of peer-reviewed publications in reputable venues in the areas of generative AI, cybersecurity, privacy, or closely related fields.
As the successful applicant, you will also have;
* PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, or a closely related discipline, awarded or near completion at the time of appointment
* Hands‐on experience with mainstream deep learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow) and their application to generative modelling or detection tasks
* Demonstrated research experience in at least one of: synthetic data generation, multimodal detection, privacy-preserving machine learning, or adversarial robustness
* Experience implementing and evaluating machine learning pipelines, including model training, benchmarking, and ablation studies
* Practical experience with data security measures and privacy risk assessment in digital systems
* Experience contributing to collaborative or externally funded research projects, including milestone tracking and research reporting, is desirable
