Job Title: Senior Data Scientist Location: Sydney Employment Type: Contract We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist to take ownership of the reliability and management of production data science systems. This role focuses on problem-solving, managing production incidents, prioritising and managing deployments, and strengthening coding standards across the data science team. This is a senior individual contributor role, and you will work closely with the Principal Data Scientist, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and coordinate delivery partners to ensure production systems run reliably and improvements are delivered effectively. What You'll Do: Production Management: Investigate and resolve issues impacting production systems, including reviewing and troubleshooting Python errors and coordinating fixes with relevant teams. Stakeholder Communication: Clearly communicate issues, root causes, and resolution updates to technical teams and project stakeholders. Production Updates & Deployments: Work with the Principal Data Scientist to prioritise updates and manage deployments to production systems. Offshore Team Coordination: Manage and collaborate with offshore partners responsible for operational tasks, ensuring work is prioritised and delivered effectively. Coding Standards & Engineering Practices: Collaborate with the Principal Data Scientist to elevate coding standards across the team. Implement and enforce best practices such as pre-commit hooks, automated testing, and code quality checks. Guide the broader team to adopt these standards in new development and align existing production code where appropriate. Engineering Improvements: Encourage adoption of engineering best practices in new development and help align existing production code with improved standards where appropriate. ML & LLM Systems Oversight: Support the stability and performance of machine learning models and Large Language Model (LLM) solutions deployed in production environments. Stakeholder Communication: Clearly communicate technical issues, root causes, and resolutions to internal teams and project stakeholders. What We're Looking For: Essential: 5 years of experience in data science or a closely related field. Solid experience with NLP and large language models (LLMs) — including fine-tuning, working with APIs, prompt design, or deploying LLM-powered systems into production. Strong Python skills, with confidence in diagnosing and troubleshooting issues in production environments. Proven track record of owning or managing live ML systems, with an understanding of what it takes to keep them stable. Solid experience working with Databricks for building and managing production data pipelines and ML workflows. Clear, thoughtful communication skills, able to translate technical details for both technical peers and non-technical stakeholders. Experience collaborating across teams to solve complex problems with strong interpersonal skills. A genuine commitment to code quality, with practical experience implementing coding standards, best practices, and tooling that stick. A degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline. Desirable: Experience in MLOps or a role bridging data science and engineering. Familiarity with deployment infrastructure — containers, orchestration, feature stores, or similar. Experience mentoring or guiding other data scientists. Background in or strong working knowledge of data engineering principles and practices. Why This Role Matters: This is an opportunity to take full ownership of production data science, ML, and LLM systems, while shaping engineering and coding standards across the data science team. The role offers a chance to make a tangible impact on the reliability, performance, and scalability of production systems. Working closely with experienced leaders, you will drive improvements across the codebase and play a key role in advancing the organization’s data science operations. The ideal candidate is hands-on, proactive, and passionate about data science, with a strong commitment to quality, innovation, and delivering results in production environments. How to Apply: This is an immediate opportunity. If you are interested, please apply now and don’t miss this unique chance to take ownership of production data science, ML, and LLM systems.
