Overview
Opportunities are available for an experienced Senior Communications Engineer and a Service & Communications Technician – Technical Support Specialist to support our Utilities business.
In these roles, you will be responsible for the development, detailed design, procurement support, construction interface, testing, and commissioning of communications systems for high‐voltage transmission projects.
Working within an EPC environment, both positions lead the communications scope from bid stage through to project handover, delivering utility‐grade networks for protection, SCADA, teleprotection, voice and data services. The core objective is to deliver fully compliant, thoroughly tested, and well‐documented systems that are ready for seamless handover to the asset owner and utility operations teams.
About the role
* Develop end‐to‐end communications architectures for substations, transmission lines, and control‐center interfaces (e.g., IP/MPLS, SDH/PDH/SONET, microwave, fiber‐optic networks).
* Design communications solutions to support:
o Protection and teleprotection schemes (line differential, distance, pilot protection, etc.)
o SCADA, RTU/IED communications and substation automation systems
o IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus and other utility protocols
o OT LAN/WAN, voice (VoIP, phones, radios), video (CCTV), and time synchronization (NTP/PTP).
* Produce and review detailed design deliverables:
o Network topologies and logical/physical diagrams
o Equipment layouts, rack elevations, cable schedules, termination diagrams
o Interface control documents, IP addressing plans, VLAN schemes, routing plans
o Design calculations (bandwidth, latency, redundancy, link budgets for microwave, etc.).
* Ensure designs meet client standards, applicable codes, and project performance and reliability requirements.
Qualifications
* Senior Communications Engineer - Diploma/ Degree in Engineering or equivalent practical experience
* Technical Support Specialist – Appropriate qualifications and practical experience
* Relevant certifications (e.g., Cisco/Juniper networking, vendor‐specific utility communications, or OT/cybersecurity credentials) are considered an asset.
* At least 10 years of relevant experience in communications engineering within EPC/projects, utilities or critical‐infrastructure environments, with clear evidence of delivering communications scope on substation or transmission projects.
* Experience working on multi‐disciplinary projects with tight schedules and formal design and quality processes.
