Are you a skilled litigator with a passion for regulatory work?
We're seeking experienced Lawyers (Grade 7/8) to join a fast-paced legal team within the NSW Government. You will support this Department primarily in a litigation-heavy regulatory environment. This is a pivotal opportunity to contribute to high-stakes public sector outcomes involving workplace safety and regulatory enforcement.
About the Role
You will work across complex and high-profile matters, including prosecutions under the Work Health and Safety Act, often involving serious breaches, expert evidence, and technical subject matter. The role requires strong litigation capability, excellent judgement, and the ability to manage evidence-heavy cases and strict deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide clear, practical, and timely legal advice and representation
* Manage and conduct litigation matters independently (primarily prosecution, some defence-related work)
* Draft legal documents including pleadings, submissions, summonses, statements of facts, and briefing notes
* Analyse legislation, evidence, and briefs to support litigation strategy
* Review briefs of evidence and prepare preliminary advice on breaches/charges
* Brief and liaise closely with counsel and barristers
* Work effectively with witnesses, investigators, and internal stakeholders
* Prepare matters for the Industrial Court and Land & Environment Court
* Perform effectively in a reactive, high-volume work environment while meeting tight deadlines
About You
* 2–3+ years PQE (3+ strongly preferred)
* Strong litigation experience; government, regulatory, or prosecution background highly desirable
* Experience with WHS prosecutions or regulatory enforcement is an advantage
* Ability to manage complex, evidence-heavy matters and act as instructing solicitor
* Excellent communication, drafting, legal research, and stakeholder engagement skills
* Current NSW Practising Certificate with Government Legal Practitioner entitlement
* Based in Greater Sydney and able to attend the McKell office 3–4 days/week
