News Cadetship

Do you have a passion for journalism and storytelling? An insatiable curiosity and a need to know what’s going on in the world, and why? As a cadet journalist, no two days are the same as you report and produce news content for online, social, video and audio platforms, working in the field and in the studio. You’ll be trained and mentored by some of Australia’s top journalists to ensure the best support and development for your future. Working in a busy metro newsroom will equip you with the skills and experience you’ll need to work in one of the ABC’s diverse regional bureaus once you have successfully completed your cadetship.

No experience in the media industry or study in journalism is required for these cadet positions. Please select in the application form which cadetship you would like to be considered for.

The Antony Green Cadetship will be awarded to a journalism cadet who brings the kind of non-traditional expertise Antony brought to the ABC — skills that deepen and expand the way we tell stories. We’re looking for candidates who may not come from a conventional journalism background but who possess capabilities in areas such as data analysis, statistics, mathematics, coding, artificial intelligence, or other emerging fields. You might be someone who can interrogate datasets to help uncover hidden narratives, build tools that enhance reporting, or apply machine learning to help us understand complex systems. Or perhaps you bring a skill we haven’t even thought of yet — but one that could transform how we do journalism.

The Peter Ryan Cadetship will be awarded to a candidate with existing expertise in the areas of finance, business and/or economics. No experience or study in journalism is required for this cadet position, but solid written and oral communication skills are essential, as is a passion and aptitude for storytelling. If business, finance and economics excites you, and you want to get millions of other people excited by it through explaining what is going on in a way they can understand and connect with, then this opportunity is for you.

Caroline Jones Cadetship is for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander candidates who aspire to be journalists. You must identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, have an understanding of the issues affecting them, and the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.

About you

We’re not looking for specific qualifications within the media industry, but you will need to impress us with your passion, creativity and determination. You will be a self-starter, a team player, agile, adaptable and open to live and work in regional Australia following the successful completion of your cadetship. You will be enthusiastic about news, current affairs and all things digital, and be keen to connect with communities that are currently underrepresented by the ABC.
