The Opportunity
D'Arcy Weil is representing a major integrated energy company operating substantial generation assets and sophisticated wholesale trading operations is significantly expanding its origination capability across wholesale electricity, gas and environmental commodity markets.
This high-impact commercial leadership role offers direct responsibility for deal P&L outcomes, transaction structuring and origination performance. You'll be at the forefront of Australia's energy transition, structuring transactions that shape how major industrial customers, renewable developers and market participants engage with wholesale commodity markets.
Design and execute complex energy transactions across wholesale electricity and gas markets. Develop bespoke commodity solutions for Australia's largest energy users and structure innovative commercial arrangements including corporate PPAs, behind-the-metre solutions, tolling agreements, virtual power plants and sophisticated structured derivatives. Work closely with trading desks, pricing teams, risk management, legal and commercial functions to deliver transformational transactions whilst managing deal economics and portfolio optimisation outcomes.
What You'll Do
Lead Origination and Transaction Structuring:
* Design complex energy transactions including renewable PPAs (baseload, shaped, pay-as-produced), gas supply agreements (firm, interruptible, swing, seasonal), tolling arrangements, capacity agreements and sophisticated structured derivatives across wholesale electricity and gas commodity markets
* Develop bespoke energy solutions for commercial and industrial customers requiring sophisticated arrangements across both power and gas, including firming solutions, renewable integration, dual-fuel strategies and portfolio optimisation
* Build comprehensive financial models evaluating deal economics, multi-year cash flows and detailed risk profiles incorporating volumetric risk, basis risk, shape risk, gas pipeline constraints, seasonal gas pricing dynamics and counterparty credit risk
* Price complex structured products using quantitative methodologies including option pricing frameworks, Monte Carlo simulation and portfolio optimisation techniques
* Negotiate sophisticated commercial terms with customers, counterparties and project developers, managing complex multi-party arrangements
* Manage deal pipeline from opportunity identification through qualification, structuring, approval and execution
Drive Transaction Execution:
* Coordinate transaction execution across trading desks, pricing teams, risk management, legal, credit and commercial functions
* Lead renewable energy origination including utility-scale wind, solar and battery storage projects
* Analyse wholesale market fundamentals across NEM regions and east coast gas markets to identify commercial opportunities
* Collaborate with power and gas trading teams, and pricing functions, on hedging strategies and risk management for complex transactions
* Work closely with pricing teams to develop competitive yet risk-appropriate pricing for bespoke customer solutions
* Monitor deal performance and manage post-execution obligations
Build Strategic Relationships:
* Develop and maintain deep relationships with Australia's largest energy users across manufacturing, resources, data centres and commercial real estate sectors
* Cultivate strategic relationships with renewable energy developers, technology providers and infrastructure investors
* Originate new business opportunities through proactive stakeholder engagement and industry participation
What You Need
Essential:
* 5-8 years' experience in energy deal structuring, origination or commodity trading with proven track record executing complex transactions exceeding $50M in value
* Proven expertise structuring and closing multiple large-scale energy transactions including PPAs, tolling agreements, gas supply arrangements or structured derivatives in Australian markets
* Deep understanding of Australian electricity and gas markets including NEM operations, spot market dynamics, AEMO systems, market mechanisms, transmission frameworks, east coast gas market dynamics and regulatory environment (NER, Retailer Reliability Obligation)
* Advanced financial modelling capabilities including deal economics, discounted cash flow analysis, risk assessment frameworks and portfolio optimisation using Excel, Python or equivalent platforms
* Demonstrated experience structuring corporate power purchase agreements for renewable energy projects, understanding offtake risk, shape risk and merchant exposure
* Strong understanding of gas markets including pipeline constraints, storage dynamics, demand profiles and seasonal pricing patterns across east coast markets
* Comprehensive knowledge of energy derivatives, hedging strategies, portfolio management principles and risk management frameworks including VaR and P&L attribution
* Proven commercial negotiation skills with ability to structure and close complex multi-party transactions
* High-level proficiency with analytical tools, pricing models and market data platforms (Bloomberg, Refinitiv, PLEXOS, NTNDP)
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively across trading, pricing, risk, commercial and legal functions in
* matrixed organisation structures
* Strong executive presence and stakeholder management capabilities with C-suite customers and senior counterparties
* Tertiary qualification in engineering (electrical, mechanical, chemical), finance, economics, mathematics or related quantitative discipline
Highly Valued:
* Renewable energy expertise including project development, construction risk assessment and technology evaluation
* Deep knowledge of environmental commodities including Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs), Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) and Renewable Energy Certificates
* Existing relationships across Australian energy markets including major industrials, renewable developers and financiers
* Understanding of power portfolio management, asset optimisation, generation fleet dispatch and ancillary services markets (FCAS, system strength)
* Experience with battery energy storage systems including revenue stacking and arbitrage strategies
* Postgraduate qualification in finance, energy economics or related commercial discipline
