Primary objective
Provide strategic policy advice on matters relating to education and intergovernmental activity and coordinate the
monitoring and reporting of the department's response to strategic reform initiatives.
Context statement
The Intergovernmental Relations team, situated within Strategic Policy, is responsible for overseeing strategic partnerships
with the Australian Government and Northern Territory Government agencies, ensuring the department's interests are
effectively represented in national forums and collaborative initiatives. Through high-quality, evidence-based advice, the
team informs senior policy, planning, and decision-making, while supporting the negotiation and implementation of
intergovernmental agreements and contributing to whole-of-government coordination on national reform priorities.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide detailed analysis and strategic advice on current and emerging public policy issues and initiatives in education
locally, nationally and internationally.
2. Support the development, establishment and implementation of key strategies and policies to drive the department's
improvement agenda and public accountability.
3. Analysis of intergovernmental agreements, including funding arrangements and national partnerships, to prepare advice
and recommendations for senior management.
4. Manage the development and implementation of strategic policy and projects and provide support to a small, but
dynamic work unit to achieve its operational goals.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. High level demonstrated strategic, conceptual and analytical skills, and ability to understand the business and
organisational environment, and to recognise links between interconnected issues.
2. Ability to research complex issues; collate, analyse and interpret information, including data and financial information;
to evaluate options, and prepare appropriate advice and recommendations to senior management.
3. Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to build and sustain productive relationships, operate as an effective
team member, and to consult, collaborate and negotiate effectively with others.
4. Highly developed communication skills with a demonstrated capacity to write in a clear and concise manner and ensure
messages are appropriate to targeted audiences, including policy briefs and complex correspondence.
1. Sound experience in project management, strategic planning and reporting with the ability to achieve results within
limited timeframes while maintaining integrity and professionalism.
6. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
Desirable
1. Bachelor level or post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline.
2. Knowledge of education systems and the strategic directions and objectives of the Department of Education and
Training.
