ABOUT THE POSTION

This exciting
Emerging Teaching Artist position
is a unique opportunity for an early career artist to develop their skills and practice in a supportive, hands-on environment.
Working 3 days a week for six months
, this position will be mentored by AGWA's Head of Learning and Creativity Research and AGWA Teaching Artists to gain invaluable experience in
Gallery 09
, an interactive exhibition space dedicated to
artist-led projects
that centre participation, inclusivity, and creative exploration.

As part of a highly collaborative team, this position will engage directly with audiences of all ages and abilities, supporting the delivery of
public engagement and school workshops.
Through on-the-job mentorship and practice sharing they will explore
slow-learning practices
that
support social and emotional wellbeing.

This role is ideal for an emerging artist who is passionate about working with children and families, education, community engagement, and participatory arts practice, and who is looking to develop as a Teaching Artist
within a gallery context. The position will work alongside lead artists, staff and trained volunteers to support long-term exhibitions that are designed to have
social and emotional impact
.

There are currently 4 fixed-term, part-time (0.6 FTE) vacancies available for immediate filling across the next 6 months. There will be a pool process to fulfil a further 4 fixed-term, part-time positions within the remaining 12 months.

The interview process will be in a workshop format, where eligible candidates will interact and collaborate amongst one another.

The second stage of interviews for successful candidates will be an informal, conversational meeting to further discuss your skills and the role.

ABOUT THE PERSON

We're looking for a
n energetic, enthusiastic, and curious early career artist
who loves working with children and is passionate about the intersection of contemporary arts practice, gallery education, and community engagement. You are someone who thrives in team-oriented environments, is confident communicating with people of all ages and abilities, and brings a generous, open-minded approach to creative facilitation.

You are eager to grow as a
Teaching Artist,
and excited by the opportunity to be mentored by industry leaders while contributing meaningfully to a space that values
participation, process, and inclusivity.
You may have experience in visual arts, performance, socially engaged practice, or interdisciplinary fields.

You are comfortable stepping into a gallery setting that is unpredictable and hands-on, and you bring a willingness to experiment, reflect, and learn as part of a wider team. A genuine interest in working with children and community groups, and a commitment to
accessibility and inclusion,
will be central to your success in this role.

ABOUT AGWA

The Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) is the State's premier Art Museum. Situated in the heart of Perth's Cultural Centre, the Gallery houses the State Art Collection of over 18,300 works by renowned local and international artists from the 1800's to today, including approximately 3,000 Aboriginal works. In 2020, the Gallery celebrated 125 years of operation.

OTHER CONDITIONS:

Working with Children Check
is required for the role. The successful candidate must obtain the check, however AGWA will cover the cost.
